Chapter 9 - THE FATHER DANIEL NEVER KNEW

Daniel’s father was named Thomas Walker.

At least that was what Daniel had believed.

Thomas had been a civil engineer.

Quiet.

Distant.

Dead from a heart attack when Daniel was twenty-one.

Daniel remembered fishing trips.

Arguments over grades.

A man who rarely said “I love you” but always checked the tires before Daniel drove anywhere.

Eleanor looked at him.

“Thomas Walker was not your biological father.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“Of course not.”

“Daniel.”

“No, please. Continue. Apparently every dead person I knew is alive and every living person lied.”

Eleanor took the anger.

She seemed to expect it.

“Your biological father was Adrian Voss.”

Daniel stopped.

“Your brother?”

“My half brother.”

Daniel stared.

He remembered family photographs.

Adrian Voss.

Military intelligence.

Died overseas before Daniel was born.

Another dead man.

Eleanor continued.

“He was involved in the earliest Sentinel architecture.”

“And he was my father?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked away.

“He wanted you assessed because he believed aptitude could be inherited.”

“My father wanted to recruit his child into intelligence work?”

“He wanted to control you.”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“I refused.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You said he was going to kill me.”

“When I removed you from the assessment program, Adrian considered you a security risk.”

“At sixteen?”

“He believed identity was irrelevant. Information was everything.”

Daniel looked toward the altar.

“And Marcus?”

“Marcus helped me fake my death.”

That surprised him.

“You said he was going to kill me.”

“No. I said I disappeared because Marcus Vane was going to kill you.”

Daniel turned sharply.

Eleanor continued.

“He was ordered to.”

Silence.

“He refused.”

Daniel stared.

“He arranged my disappearance instead. He altered your records so you would no longer appear connected to Adrian.”

“But recruited me seven years later.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“Because Adrian found you again.”

Daniel felt sick.

“Marcus believed keeping you inside Sentinel was safer than leaving you exposed.”

“So my entire career…”

“Was partly protection.”

“And partly manipulation.”

“Yes.”

Daniel paced.

“Where is Adrian?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Daniel stopped.

“Where?”

“He died.”

Daniel laughed.

“I’ve heard that one.”

“This time it’s true.”

“When?”

“Black Harbor.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Eleanor walked toward a side room.

Inside waited a projector and several boxes of documents.

She played an old surveillance recording.

A man appeared.

Older.

Angular face.

Daniel saw something of himself in the eyes.

Adrian Voss.

His biological father.

The recording date was eleven years ago.

Two days before Black Harbor.

Adrian spoke to someone off camera.

“If Daniel survives the route diversion, terminate him afterward.”

Daniel went completely still.

The second voice belonged to Marcus Vane.

“No.”

Adrian continued.

“He is unstable.”

“He is your son.”

“He is an asset.”

Marcus stepped into frame.

“You lost the right to call him that decades ago.”

Adrian smiled.

“If you refuse, I’ll use Caldwell.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

Reed.

The video continued.

Marcus said, “Reed doesn’t know what Continuity is.”

“He doesn’t need to.”

“You manipulate the route and people die.”

“Acceptable.”

Marcus moved closer.

“Not to me.”

Adrian looked almost amused.

“You’re getting sentimental.”

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the blank wall.

“So Marcus tried to prevent Black Harbor.”

Eleanor nodded.

“He created a plan to expose Adrian.”

“But the fake route test…”

“Was Adrian’s.”

Daniel understood.

Marcus told Reed it was a loyalty test.

Adrian manipulated Marcus.

Multiple layers.

Everyone using partial information.

“That’s why Marcus disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“He killed Adrian?”

Eleanor paused.

“He says Adrian died during the attack.”

“You don’t believe him?”

“I believe Marcus believes it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“Adrian’s body was never recovered.”

Daniel almost laughed again.

“Dead without a body. Very convincing family tradition.”

Eleanor looked toward the church door.

“There is more.”

“There always is.”

“The civilian board that expanded Continuity afterward was not created by Marcus.”

“Cole, Hale, Whitmore.”

“They were participants.”

“Who created it?”

Eleanor looked at her son.

“Someone using Adrian’s authorization.”

Daniel stopped.

“Meaning Adrian may be alive.”

“Or someone inherited his identity.”

Daniel thought of Marcus Vane’s dead credentials being reactivated.

Anna’s identity being used for hospital access.

Eleanor Voss Trust.

Continuity did not merely hide people.

It preserved identities as access keys.

Dead names remained operational.

“Why did Lily trust you?”

Eleanor’s face softened.

“She found me.”

“How?”

“Anna.”

Daniel looked up.

“Anna knew where you were?”

“Not exactly.”

“Explain.”

“Anna discovered encrypted correspondence I sent Marcus.”

“During her Continuity investigation.”

“Yes.”

“She traced me.”

Eleanor almost smiled.

“She was relentless.”

Daniel felt the old ache.

“Yes.”

“She contacted me during her final year.”

Daniel stared.

“You met her.”

“Twice.”

Another secret.

“What did she want?”

“To make sure Lily would have someone if you ever disappeared.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Did she think I would?”

“She understood the world you came from.”

Eleanor looked toward the old church window.

“Anna gave me instructions. If Lily ever found the Sentinel Ledger, I was to help her without involving you.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew what you would do.”

Daniel said nothing.

“She believed if you reactivated Ghost too quickly, Continuity would identify every surviving member.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

He thought of the encrypted phone.

One button.

Ghost Actual. Reactivate.

Three SUVs arrived.

He had done exactly what Anna feared.

“What happens when Ghost activates?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“It wakes dormant nodes.”

Daniel went still.

“People?”

“Accounts. surveillance. old assets. communication relays.”

“Meaning I didn’t just call Reed.”

“No.”

Daniel’s blood chilled.

“You announced to Continuity that Ghost Actual was operational again.”

“Yes.”

He thought of the message.

THE FATHER THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE AWAKENED.

Except perhaps someone wanted him awake.

“Who sent the encrypted phone messages?”

“Some were Marcus.”

“Some?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don’t know who sent the others.”

Daniel looked at her.

“The hospital warning?”

“Not Marcus.”

“The photograph of Anna?”

“No.”

“The messages about you?”

“No.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Then another player is inside Ghost.”

“Yes.”

His phone vibrated.

He looked.

UNKNOWN NODE CONNECTED.

GHOST SIX.

Daniel stared.

Ghost Six had been dead twelve years.

Her name was Rachel Quinn.

One of the six killed at Black Harbor.

A new message appeared.

ACTUAL, IF YOU CAN READ THIS, DO NOT TRUST VANE.

Daniel showed Eleanor.

She went pale.

“That can’t be Rachel.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Rachel Quinn didn’t die at Black Harbor.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Eleanor whispered.

“She died last year.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived from Ghost Six.

AND DO NOT TRUST YOUR MOTHER.
