Chapter 12 - THE SISTER IN THE SHADOW

Eleanor arrived at the hospital voluntarily.
Torres placed her inside a private conference room.
Daniel entered alone.
His mother looked tired.
“You spoke to Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know.”
“I know Adrian had another daughter.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Daniel sat across from her.
“Name.”
“Daniel.”
“Name.”
“Victoria.”
“Victoria what?”
“Voss.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
Eleanor did not move.
“You protected her.”
“When she was a child.”
“From what?”
“Adrian.”
Daniel stared.
“He called her his heir.”
“Eventually.”
“How old is she?”
“Fifty.”
Three years older than Daniel.
“Who was her mother?”
“A Sentinel analyst named Catherine Vale.”
“Alive?”
“No.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Actually dead?”
“Yes.”
“Forgive the skepticism.”
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
“Victoria showed unusual intelligence very young. Adrian became obsessed with shaping her.”
“The same way he later assessed me.”
“Yes.”
“You helped hide her.”
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“Adrian found her at nineteen.”
“And?”
“She chose him.”
Daniel sat back.
That mattered.
“She wasn’t forced.”
“Not by then.”
“What did she become?”
“Continuity’s architect.”
Daniel stared.
“Not Adrian?”
“Adrian created the theory. Victoria built the civilian network.”
Cole.
Hale.
Whitmore.
Hospitals.
Universities.
Police.
All arranged by his unknown half sister.
“Why didn’t Marcus know her name?”
“Adrian compartmented them.”
“Why?”
“He never trusted anyone.”
“Apparently genetic.”
Eleanor accepted it.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Is Victoria using Adrian’s credentials?”
“I assume so.”
“Where has she been?”
“Hidden.”
“In government?”
“I don’t know.”
“Corporate?”
“I don’t know.”
“University?”
Eleanor’s eyes flickered.
Daniel saw it.
“University.”
She remained silent.
He stood.
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
“WHO?”
“Sit down.”
He did not.
Eleanor looked toward the door.
“You’re too angry to hear this.”
“Try me.”
She sighed.
“Victoria has used multiple identities.”
“Give me one.”
“Dr. Vivian Ross.”
Daniel stopped.
Ross.
Nathaniel Ross.
University president.
“His wife?”
“His sister.”
Daniel stared.
Nathaniel Ross had an older sister named Vivian.
A respected neuroscientist.
Former federal research consultant.
Current chair of the university’s Behavioral Systems Institute.
Daniel had seen her name.
Lily had taken one of her classes.
His blood went cold.
“Lily knows her.”
“Yes.”
“Did Victoria know Lily was your granddaughter?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“She taught my daughter.”
“Apparently.”
Daniel moved toward the door.
Eleanor stood.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
“Victoria will expect you to react exactly like this.”
“Good.”
“No.”
Eleanor’s voice sharpened.
“She has studied you since you were sixteen.”
Daniel stopped.
“She knows how you enter buildings. How you question people. How you prioritize threats. How grief changes your judgment.”
“And?”
“She designed portions of Sentinel conditioning.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“Memory.”
“Yes.”
“What did they take from me?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Not a memory.”
“What?”
“A recognition pattern.”
Daniel frowned.
“When you were sixteen, Victoria participated in your assessments under another name.”
“What name?”
“Dr. Claire Morgan.”
Daniel remembered nothing.
Eleanor continued.
“She conditioned you not to retain her face.”
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“Not literally erase. Repeated stress exposure. visual substitution. sleep deprivation. You were young.”
Daniel tried to recall.
A woman in a white coat.
A voice.
Questions.
Blurred.
“I met my sister.”
“Yes.”
“And forgot.”
“That was the intention.”
Torres opened the door without knocking.
“We found Vivian Ross.”
Daniel turned.
“Where?”
“She entered university Behavioral Systems Building forty minutes ago.”
“Agents?”
“Surrounding it.”
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
“Is there another way out?”
“Yes.”
Torres frowned.
“How do you know?”
Eleanor stood.
“Because I designed one.”
Twenty minutes later, federal teams surrounded the university building.
Students had been evacuated under a gas leak pretext.
Torres coordinated entry.
Daniel studied plans Eleanor provided.
“Sub-basement corridor exits beneath the old library.”
Torres dispatched a team.
Daniel pointed at another passage.
“What’s this?”
“Observation tunnel.”
“Still active?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Useful phrase today.”
The entry team breached.
No gunfire.
No resistance.
Vivian Ross’s office was empty.
Computer drives physically destroyed.
Laboratory stripped.
But one room remained locked.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Thousands.
Daniel at sixteen.
Daniel at twenty-three.
Anna.
Lily.
Eleanor.
Reed.
Marcus.
Ghost team members.
A lifetime turned into a wall.
Torres whispered.
“She really did study you.”
Daniel walked toward a photograph of Lily leaving a coffee shop.
Taken six weeks earlier.
Vivian Ross stood in the background.
Watching.
Then Daniel saw another image.
Vivian standing beside Ethan Cole.
Date: six months earlier.
Another.
Vivian with Nathaniel Ross.
Another.
Vivian with Charles Cole.
Another.
Robert Whitmore.
Graham Hale.
All the families.
Daniel turned to Torres.
“She built them.”
On a desk sat a single envelope.
GHOST ACTUAL.
Daniel opened it.
A letter.
Dear Brother,
If you are reading this, Lily survived longer than expected.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
I am glad.
You will not believe that, but sentiment and necessity are not mutually exclusive.
Anna understood this better than you.
She was extraordinary.
She also stole something from me.
Not the ledger.
You assume everything is data because Marcus trained you poorly.
Anna stole succession.
Daniel continued.
When Continuity transitioned after Adrian’s death, control required three authorizations:
Civilian architecture.
Legacy archive.
Operational command.
I possess the first.
Anna transferred the second into Walker lineage protections.
You possess the third whether you want it or not.
Ghost Actual cannot be replaced.
It can only be inherited.
Daniel stopped.
Torres read over his shoulder.
The final paragraph:
Lily was never the target.
She was the test.
You were.
Daniel’s face changed.
A screen in the room turned on.
Live video.
Room 914.
Lily sat awake.
Reed beside her.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
The feed zoomed.
Nothing dangerous.
Then Vivian’s voice played.
“If you want to know what the test measured, brother, ask yourself a simple question.”
The camera shifted from Lily to Reed.
“Why did I allow both of them to live?”
The screen went black.
Daniel’s encrypted phone vibrated.
NEW GHOST COMMAND AUTHORITY DETECTED.
He stared.
Someone else had just activated command privileges equal to his.

Designation:
