Chapter 17 - The Woman Who Was Anna
Daniel demanded every detail.
Elizabeth finally told him what had happened eight years earlier.
Anna discovered that Continuity had located Lily's genetic profile.
She realized the organization would eventually come for her.
So Anna made a deal.
She would disappear voluntarily if Continuity left Daniel and Lily alone.
Daniel stared at her.
“She abandoned us?”
“No.”
Elizabeth's voice softened.
“She sacrificed herself.”
Daniel looked away.
“I spent eight years believing she died.”
“Because that was the only way Continuity could be convinced you believed it.”
“Then why did Reed lie?”
“Because Anna ordered him to.”
Daniel remembered Reed's confession.
Anna alive.
Daniel unconscious.
Six hours missing.
Everything had been carefully constructed.
Except one thing.
“What happened to Anna?”
Elizabeth hesitated.
“Anna escaped Saint Orison three years ago.”
Daniel's head snapped up.
“And she never came home?”
“She tried.”
“When?”
“Four times.”
Daniel froze.
“Four?”
“Every attempt was intercepted.”
“By whom?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Claire Morgan.”
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“She was working for Continuity?”
“She created their memory-conditioning program.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Then why did she save Lily?”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“She didn't.”
