Chapter 19 - The Memory Room

Daniel entered the underground chamber alone.

The door locked behind him.

Screens illuminated the walls.

Every screen showed a different memory.

His wedding.

Lily's birth.

Anna holding Lily.

His mother's funeral.

His first meeting with Marcus.

Then the image changed.

Sixteen-year-old Daniel.

Claire Morgan stood behind him.

“Tell me your name.”

“Daniel Walker.”

“Who is Anna?”

“My mother.”

Claire smiled.

“No.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

He remembered.

Anna had never been his mother.

She was his wife.

The memory had been altered.

He stepped backward.

Another screen activated.

Anna was sitting beside sixteen-year-old Daniel.

She was crying.

“I'm sorry.”

Claire's voice came from behind him.

“You were conditioned to forget what happened that summer.”

Daniel turned.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

“You.”

Claire smiled.

“You finally remember me.”

“What did you do to me?”

“I saved you.”

“You destroyed my memories.”

“I removed the memories that would have gotten you killed.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Where is Lily?”

Claire looked toward the ceiling.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere Anna can reach her.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Anna is alive.”

Claire said nothing.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Where is my wife?”

Claire whispered:

“She is closer than you think.”

A hidden door opened.

Anna stood on the other side.

Daniel stopped breathing.

She looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

May you like

Anna whispered:

“Danny.”
