Chapter 11 - THE LIE AIMED AT LILY

Daniel’s first reaction was not shock.

It was recognition.

Classic destabilization.

Introduce a personal claim so emotionally powerful that the target stops evaluating evidence.

Marcus had taught him the technique.

Lily stared at the screen.

Daniel turned the laptop away.

“No.”

Her eyes went to him.

“That is bait.”

She wrote:

IS IT TRUE?

“No.”

Daniel answered instantly.

Because he knew.

Anna had become pregnant during one of the rare periods when Daniel had been home for months.

He had been present at every appointment after learning.

He had held Lily thirty seconds after she was born.

But biology did not care about memory.

Torres recognized the need for certainty.

“We can test.”

Daniel looked at her.

Lily wrote:

DO IT.

Daniel sighed.

“Fine.”

A hospital lab technician collected samples under federal observation.

Daniel hated every second.

Not because he doubted Lily.

Because someone had managed to inject doubt into her hospital room while she was barely able to speak.

He wanted the person behind A.V. more than ever.

While waiting, Torres received results from arrests.

University President Nathaniel Ross had been detained attempting to destroy files.

Hospital CEO Lauren Briggs retained counsel.

Charles Cole had left his mansion but was stopped at a private airport.

Graham Hale voluntarily appeared with attorneys.

Robert Whitmore disappeared.

“Tyler’s father ran,” Daniel said.

“Yes.”

“Which means he knows more than the others.”

“Usually.”

“What about Ethan and Brandon?”

“Restricted by court order. Phones seized after warrants.”

Daniel nodded.

“Ethan’s blood?”

Torres looked at him.

“What?”

“Lily scratched him.”

She understood.

“Forensic evidence.”

“Yes.”

“We’ll compare DNA under her nails.”

That mattered.

Not secret networks.

Not old covert identities.

Simple evidence.

The kind Anna wanted.

Facts capable of surviving court.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“That’s how we win.”

She watched him.

“Not Ghost.”

She tapped twice.

“Yes.

Hours later, Tyler woke.

Torres questioned him with counsel present.

Daniel observed behind glass.

Tyler looked small in the hospital bed.

Not cocky.

Not wealthy.

Just twenty-one and terrified.

“I blocked the door,” Tyler admitted.

His lawyer closed his eyes.

“I knew they wanted the drive. I thought they’d scare her.”

Torres asked, “Who arranged it?”

“President Ross.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“University president?”

Torres continued.

“Why would Nathaniel Ross involve students?”

“Because our fathers told him we were protected.”

“Protected from what?”

“Anything.”

Tyler began crying.

“My dad always said consequences were for people without leverage.”

Daniel stared through the glass.

There it was.

The entire philosophy of Continuity condensed into one sentence.

Consequences were for other people.

Tyler continued.

“When Ethan started hitting Lily, I told him to stop.”

“You blocked the exit.”

“I know.”

“You prevented her from escaping.”

“I know.”

“Then Maya was abducted.”

“I didn’t know that would happen.”

“But you kept quiet.”

Tyler nodded.

Daniel felt no sympathy.

But he recognized the difference between guilt and leadership.

Tyler had participated.

Ethan had escalated.

Brandon had documented humiliation.

Adults had organized the confrontation.

Institutions had covered it up.

All of them mattered.

Torres asked, “Did you see Marcus Vane?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He came in after Ethan hit Lily.”

“Did he assault her?”

Tyler hesitated.

“He grabbed her arm.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Did he order Maya abducted?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who did?”

“Ross.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

Tyler continued.

“Ross was on speakerphone.”

“Did you hear him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Tyler swallowed.

“Take the roommate. Clean the room. Get Lily downstairs.”

“Why downstairs?”

“I don’t know.”

“What happened?”

“Marcus refused.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Tyler continued.

“He said Lily needed a hospital. Ross said she knew too much.”

“Then?”

“Marcus punched Ethan.”

Daniel blinked.

Torres did too.

“Why?”

“Ethan tried to hit Lily again.”

Tyler’s voice trembled.

“Marcus knocked him out.”

That explained why Ethan might hate Marcus too.

“What happened after?”

“Fire alarm.”

“Who pulled it?”

“Lily.”

Daniel almost laughed.

With a broken jaw and after being beaten, she had still created chaos.

“She got into the stairwell.”

“Then?”

“She fell.”

Daniel froze.

Tyler shook his head.

“Nobody pushed her down those stairs.”

Torres asked, “You expect us to believe that?”

“I swear.”

“Her injuries are consistent with assault and a fall.”

“Ethan beat her. But the stairs…”

Tyler looked toward the observation glass as if sensing Daniel.

“She jumped.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“What?”

“She knew they were going to take her.”

Torres’s face changed.

Tyler continued.

“She climbed over the railing to the lower landing.”

A one-story drop.

“She chose the fall?”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His daughter had injured herself further to escape abduction.

“Marcus ran after her.”

“Did he touch her?”

“He called 911.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

The emergency call.

Anonymous.

Not campus security.

Marcus had saved Lily’s life.

Again the line between enemy and ally blurred.

After the interview, Daniel returned to Lily.

“You jumped.”

She watched him.

“You couldn’t tell me that earlier?”

Her eyes almost smiled.

He rubbed his face.

“You’re grounded.”

A small sound escaped her damaged jaw.

Possibly laughter.

Daniel sat.

“Marcus called the ambulance.”

Lily nodded.

“You trust him?”

She hesitated.

Then shook her head.

Daniel understood.

Saving someone once did not erase decades of manipulation.

The lab technician entered.

DNA results.

Daniel took the page.

Probability of biological paternity greater than 99.999 percent.

He handed it directly to Lily.

“Told you.”

She read.

Relief filled her eyes.

Daniel leaned toward her.

“Whoever sent that message wanted us fighting each other.”

She nodded.

“Not happening.”

Her fingers wrapped around his.

Then the encrypted phone rang.

Not a message.

An actual call.

Daniel answered.

Marcus Vane.

“Daniel.”

“Where are you?”

“Not important.”

“You saved Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because Anna made me promise.”

Daniel’s anger sharpened.

“You keep using my wife’s name as a shield.”

“I deserve that.”

“Who is using Adrian Voss’s identity?”

Marcus went silent.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You have a theory.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

Marcus breathed slowly.

“Adrian had another child.”

Daniel stopped.

“My half sibling?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I never knew the name.”

“Convenient.”

“It was hidden even from Continuity.”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

“Male or female?”

“Female.”

Daniel’s mother had never mentioned another child.

Marcus continued.

“Adrian called her his true heir.”

Daniel’s blood chilled.

“What does she want?”

“Continuity.”

“Why Lily?”

“Because Anna’s dead-man architecture placed control of the ledger behind Walker family authentication.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“She needs Lily’s access.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

“You are Ghost Actual.”

“What does that give her?”

“The one thing Continuity never managed to rebuild.”

“What?”

Marcus answered quietly.

“Operational command.”

Daniel stared out the hospital window.

“If she gets both?”

“She can merge the civilian board with Ghost infrastructure.”

“Creating?”

Marcus paused.

“Sentinel restored.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Name.”

“I don’t have one.”

The line crackled.

Then Marcus said something unexpected.

“But your mother does.”

Daniel turned.

May you like

“How do you know?”

“Because Eleanor has spent thirty-one years protecting your sister.”
