Chapter 10 - THE LEDGER OPENS

Daniel left the church with fewer certainties than when he entered.
Eleanor did not attempt to stop him.
Before he walked out, she said one thing.
“Ask Lily why Rachel contacted her.”
Daniel turned.
“You knew?”
“I knew Rachel was involved.”
“With Lily?”
“Yes.”
“And you withheld that until now.”
“I learned caution from experience.”
Daniel stared at her.
“No. You learned secrecy.”
He left.
Torres had followed at a distance despite his instructions.
Daniel discovered her vehicle two blocks away.
He got into the passenger seat without invitation.
She looked at him.
“Well?”
“My mother is alive.”
“That part we knew.”
“My father wasn’t my father.”
Torres blinked.
“Okay.”
“My biological father created a precursor to Sentinel and may or may not have died at Black Harbor.”
“Of course.”
“Rachel Quinn survived Black Harbor but died last year, and someone is currently messaging me using her credentials.”
Torres started the engine.
“You have the worst family reunions I have ever encountered.”
Daniel stared ahead.
“Drive.”
Back at the hospital, Lily was awake longer.
Pain medication kept her groggy.
Daniel sat beside her.
“I met Eleanor.”
Lily watched his face.
“You should have told me.”
Her eyes lowered.
Daniel immediately softened.
“I’m not angry.”
That was not entirely true.
But the anger was not for her.
“Did Anna tell you to find Eleanor?”
Lily shook her head.
“Rachel Quinn?”
Lily nodded.
Daniel leaned forward.
“You knew Rachel?”
A weak nod.
“How?”
Lily reached slowly for a notepad.
Writing hurt less than speaking.
Her hand trembled.
She wrote:
EMAIL.
“When?”
She wrote:
LAST YEAR.
Daniel felt cold.
“Before she died?”
YES.
“Did you meet?”
YES.
“Why?”
Lily wrote:
SHE KNEW MOM.
Daniel looked at Reed.
Reed shook his head.
“I didn’t know.”
Daniel returned his attention to Lily.
“What did Rachel tell you?”
Lily wrote carefully.
MOM SAVED HER.
“How?”
Lily wrote another line.
BLACK HARBOR.
Daniel stared.
Anna was not part of Black Harbor.
At least not physically.
He waited.
Lily continued:
MOM FOUND HER IN A FILE.
ALIVE.
HIDDEN.
Daniel understood.
Anna’s investigation discovered Rachel survived.
“Where was she?”
Lily wrote:
CONTINUITY.
“Working for them?”
Lily shook her head.
PRISONER.
Torres stepped closer.
“For eleven years?”
Lily wrote:
8 YEARS.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What happened three years after Black Harbor?”
Lily wrote one name.
MARCUS.
Daniel stared.
“He freed her?”
Lily nodded.
That complicated Marcus again.
Not villain.
Not ally.
Something between.
Daniel asked, “Why did Rachel contact you last year?”
Lily wrote:
SHE WAS DYING.
Daniel looked at her.
“From what?”
CANCER.
The similarity to Anna hurt.
Lily continued.
SHE GAVE ME THE FIRST KEY.
“The silver key?”
Lily shook her head.
DIGITAL.
“Sentinel Ledger.”
Yes.
“Why you?”
Lily looked at him.
Then wrote:
BECAUSE YOU WOULD BURN IT DOWN.
Torres almost coughed.
Daniel looked offended.
Lily’s eyes almost smiled.
He exhaled.
“Fair.”
She continued writing.
SHE WANTED PROOF FIRST.
NAMES.
MONEY.
CRIMES.
THEN PUBLIC.
Daniel understood.
Rachel and Anna had both feared that Daniel would respond operationally instead of strategically.
They had been correct.
“What did you find?”
Lily reached toward the battered phone.
Daniel gave it to her.
Broken screen.
She removed the case.
Inside was a thin metal strip Tyler had apparently missed.
A hardware authentication key.
Daniel almost smiled.
“Your mother would be proud.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
Daniel handed the key to Torres.
“Can we access it safely?”
Torres nodded.
“With isolated hardware.”
An hour later they used a secured laptop with no network connection.
Lily entered a memorized password slowly.
The Sentinel Ledger opened.
Twenty-seven gigabytes.
Documents going back thirty years.
Torres stared.
“This could dismantle careers across the country.”
Daniel scanned names.
Charles Cole.
Graham Hale.
Robert Whitmore.
University President Nathaniel Ross.
Hospital CEO Lauren Briggs.
Judges.
Corporate attorneys.
Police officials.
Private investigators.
But the categories mattered more.
PAYMENTS.
PROTECTION.
LEGACY.
INTERVENTION.
Daniel opened the file on Lily.
LEGACY SUBJECT 17.
STATUS: MONITOR.
MATERNAL COUNTERMEASURE ACTIVE UNTIL 2019.
Daniel looked at Lily.
Anna’s dead-man system had apparently protected her even after Anna died.
Then:
COUNTERMEASURE COMPROMISED FOLLOWING RACHEL QUINN BREACH.
Lily’s contact with Rachel triggered Continuity’s attention.
Daniel scrolled.
RECENT ACTIVITY.
Lily investigating scholarship fund.
Maya identified as associate.
Tyler classified LOW DISCIPLINE.
Brandon classified COMPLIANT.
Ethan classified HIGH RISK / USEFUL.
Daniel stared at Ethan’s file.
The board knew Ethan was violent.
They used him anyway.
Then he found the Delta House operation.
OBJECTIVE: RECOVER LEDGER ACCESS.
METHOD: PEER PRESSURE / INTIMIDATION.
NO LETHAL FORCE.
Daniel stopped.
“Marcus told the truth.”
Torres leaned closer.
“The authorized operation did not include assault.”
Daniel kept reading.
FIELD OBSERVER: M. VANE.
Then:
OPERATION COMPROMISED BY E. COLE LOSS OF CONTROL.
LILY WALKER SEVERELY INJURED.
EMERGENCY SANITIZATION AUTHORIZED.
“By whom?” Torres asked.
Daniel opened the authorization.
BOARD CHAIR C.
Could be Cole.
Daniel continued.
REMOVE MAYA CHEN.
ALTER SECURITY RECORDS.
PRESSURE LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Then one final instruction.
TERMINATE L. WALKER IF CONSCIOUS RECOVERY LIKELY.
Authorized by:
A.V.
Daniel froze.
Adrian Voss.
His father’s credentials.
Torres whispered.
“If he’s dead, someone is using his identity.”
Lily tapped the screen.
Another folder.
She had marked it.
OVERRIDE RECORDS.
Daniel opened it.
The termination order had been challenged.
M. VANE: DENIED.
Then another challenge.
E. VOSS: DENIED.
His mother tried to stop it.
Then:
A.V. OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
So neither Marcus nor Eleanor authorized the hospital attempt.
Someone using Adrian’s identity did.
Daniel looked at the access architecture.
“Can we trace A.V.?”
Lily nodded weakly.
She typed.
A map appeared.
Torres stared.
“The authorization didn’t originate overseas.”
“No.”
Daniel leaned closer.
The node was local.
Less than two miles away.
University Administration Building.
Torres immediately contacted agents.
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
The A.V. credential had accessed the system forty-one minutes ago.
Someone was there now.
He stood.
Lily grabbed his wrist.
Daniel looked down.
She wrote one word.
WAIT.
“Why?”
She opened another file.
AUTOMATED RELEASE PROTOCOL.
If A.V. node was seized improperly, the Sentinel Ledger would wipe itself.
Daniel stared.
“Trap.”
Lily nodded.
Torres asked, “Can you disable it?”
Lily began typing.
Her hands shook from medication.
Daniel stopped her.
“You need rest.”
She glared.
It was pure Anna.
Daniel let go.
Lily worked.
Progress bar.
23 percent.
44.
45.
Then the laptop screen changed.
Someone had connected remotely despite physical isolation.
Impossible.
Unless the hardware key itself contained a radio transmitter.
Daniel grabbed it and pulled it out.
Too late.
A message remained on screen.
HELLO, LILY.
Lily’s face drained.
Another line.
YOU STOLE MY LEDGER.
Then:
NOW I WANT MY DAUGHTER BACK.
Daniel stared at Lily.
His daughter looked equally confused.
May you like
A final line appeared.
ASK DANIEL WHO YOUR REAL FATHER IS.
