Chapter 22 - Marcus's Confession

Marcus finally entered the laboratory.

Anna looked at him.

“You're late.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“I spent twenty years being late.”

Daniel turned.

“What did you do?”

Marcus looked at Anna.

“I betrayed Continuity.”

Daniel waited.

Marcus continued.

“I helped create Sentinel.”

Anna's expression hardened.

“I know.”

“I thought it was designed to protect governments.”

“And?”

“It became something else.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Continuity began selecting people who could be manipulated.”

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Doctors.”

“Students.”

“Families.”

Daniel's fists tightened.

“And me?”

Marcus nodded.

“You were selected when you were sixteen.”

“Why?”

“Because you were resistant.”

Daniel remembered Claire.

Marcus continued.

“Your father refused to let them take you.”

Daniel stared.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Marcus looked down.

“He died protecting you.”

Daniel had always believed his father died of illness.

Another lie.

Marcus reached into his coat.

He removed a letter.

“Your father left this for you.”

Daniel opened it.

One sentence stood alone.

If they ever awaken you, remember who you were before they taught you to be afraid.
