Chapter 16 - The Truth About Lily
Elizabeth closed the silver case.
Daniel did not move.
“What does that mean?”
Elizabeth looked toward the empty hospital bed.
“Anna wasn't hiding you from the world.”
“Then who?”
“Lily.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Stop speaking in riddles.”
Elizabeth took a breath.
“Your daughter was never supposed to be born.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“Continuity predicted that Lily would eventually uncover the Sentinel Ledger.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if you understand what the Ledger really was.”
Elizabeth opened the silver case again.
Inside was a thin black folder.
“The Ledger wasn't a list of criminals.”
She handed it to him.
“It was a list of people capable of destroying Continuity.”
Daniel opened it.
His own name was there.
Anna's name was there.
Marcus Vane's name was there.
Then Lily's.
Daniel's fingers tightened.
“Why Lily?”
“Because she inherited something from Anna.”
“What?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Memory.”
Daniel frowned.
“Everyone has memory.”
“Not like Lily.”
Elizabeth pointed toward the folder.
“Anna discovered that Continuity had developed a conditioning method that could suppress specific memories and replace them with artificial ones.”
Daniel remembered Claire Morgan.
His sixteen-year-old self.
The missing years.
Elizabeth continued.
“Anna was one of the few people resistant to it.”
Daniel's breathing slowed.
“And Lily?”
“Lily inherited the same resistance.”
Daniel looked toward the empty bed.
“So they wanted her dead.”
“No.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“They wanted to study her.”
A terrible silence filled the room.
“And Anna refused.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“That is why your wife disappeared.”
Daniel closed the folder.
“Where did they take Lily?”
“Saint Orison.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then we're going there.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“Saint Orison isn't a prison anymore.”
