Chapter 21 - The Original Experiment
Claire led them deeper underground.
A laboratory appeared behind a concealed wall.
Daniel saw rows of old equipment.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Children's files.
He stopped at one photograph.
A young Lily.
Age six.
Daniel stared.
“Where was this taken?”
Claire answered:
“Here.”
Anna looked away.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You brought her here?”
“For one day.”
“Why?”
“To prove they were watching us.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What happened?”
“Lily walked into the memory chamber.”
Claire pointed toward a machine.
“She was six years old.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“And you tested her?”
“She wasn't harmed.”
“That isn't the point.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
“Lily touched the machine.”
The monitor activated.
Every stored memory disappeared.
Then returned.
But altered.
Claire continued.
“She didn't just resist the conditioning.”
“She erased it.”
Daniel stared.
“That was the moment Continuity realized what she was.”
Anna whispered:
“And that was the moment I knew I had to disappear.”
