Chapter 26 - The Woman Who Raised Him

The woman standing before Daniel was not Eleanor.

She was Elizabeth.

The same woman who had claimed to be her sister.

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

Elizabeth removed a small device from her pocket.

Her face changed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I am sorry.”

Anna raised her weapon.

“Don't.”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“I never wanted this.”

Daniel stared.

“Where is my mother?”

“Dead.”

“Who are you?”

Elizabeth swallowed.

“Your aunt.”

Daniel looked toward Anna.

Anna nodded.

“She is Eleanor's sister.”

Elizabeth continued.

“Eleanor died protecting you when you were three.”

Daniel's world shifted.

“Then who raised me?”

Elizabeth answered:

“I did.”

Daniel remembered childhood.

The woman who sang to him.

The woman who held him when he had nightmares.

The woman he called Mom.

It had been Elizabeth.

Not Eleanor.

Daniel's voice broke.

“Why did you let me believe otherwise?”

“Because Continuity was watching.”

Anna stepped forward.

“Eleanor agreed to become the public identity.”

Daniel stared.

“So my entire family was living under false identities.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elizabeth looked at Lily.

“Because your bloodline was the key.”
