Chapter 25 - The House That Remembered

They returned to America.

Daniel entered the house where he had grown up.

Dust covered everything.

His father's study remained untouched.

Anna stood beside him.

“This is where he taught you.”

Daniel nodded.

“He made me memorize numbers.”

“Why?”

“I thought it was mathematics.”

Anna smiled sadly.

“It wasn't.”

Daniel opened an old desk.

A hidden compartment appeared.

Inside was a cassette tape.

And a key.

He played the tape.

His father's voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you're hearing this, Continuity has awakened you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father continued.

“Do not trust the system.”

A pause.

“Do not trust your memories.”

Daniel looked at Anna.

The tape continued.

“Most importantly, do not trust the person who tells you she is your mother.”

Daniel froze.

Eleanor looked at the floor.

Anna whispered:

“Daniel…”

The tape stopped.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Who are you?”

She began crying.

“I am your mother.”

“Then why would he say that?”

She didn't answer.

Daniel turned the tape over.

A second recording began.

His father's voice returned.

May you like

“Your mother died when you were three.”

Daniel's blood turned cold.
