Chapter 9 - the board member at the center

Richard Crane arrived at the Bellavere before police could reach the hidden floor.
He claimed he had come for the emergency board meeting.
Instead, he entered the security command center and attempted to erase the elevator access history.
A technician stopped him.
By the time Lorenzo confronted Richard in the ballroom, every remaining board member had gathered around the long table.
Richard was seventy-one, elegant, and controlled. He had served beside Lorenzo’s father, supervised the Bellavere reconstruction, and acted as Vanessa’s devoted parent.
He had also known Elena.
“You should not trust Adrian,” Richard said. “He has stolen money and fled an active investigation.”
Adrian stood between two police officers near the wall.
He had surrendered after revealing Richard’s name. His pistol had not been loaded.
“The payment to my father came from a company controlled by Crane,” Adrian said.
Richard did not look at him.
“Your father represented dozens of companies.”
“The payment description referred to the Bell claim.”
“An accounting code.”
Lorenzo placed Elena’s ledger on the table.
“Then explain the other payments.”
Richard glanced at the ledger but did not touch it.
“Old records can be altered.”
“Elena recorded a warning.”
“A frightened woman’s suspicion.”
“She died in a fire three days after your company paid Adrian’s father.”
Richard turned toward Isabella.
“Your father is searching for someone to blame because he failed to save his sister.”
Lorenzo moved forward, but Isabella raised a hand.
She had spent years watching powerful men turn emotion into weakness. Marcus had done it to her. Richard was doing it now to Lorenzo.
“Why did Vanessa introduce Marcus to the woman from the hidden floor?” Isabella asked.
Richard’s calm expression shifted.
“I know nothing about that.”
“Your daughter says otherwise.”
“My daughter is frightened and confused.”
“She provided messages.”
“Messages can be fabricated. You have already seen how easily someone copied your face and voice.”
He had prepared the answer too quickly.
Isabella leaned toward him.
“You knew about the false video.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“Everyone in this hotel knows by now.”
“No. The investigators did not disclose that detail.”
The ballroom became silent.
Richard’s eyes moved toward the doors.
Hotel security closed them.
Lorenzo spoke quietly.
“Sit down.”
Richard remained standing.
“You cannot detain a board member.”
“The police can.”
Two investigators entered.
Richard’s attorney immediately objected, but the officers presented a warrant authorizing the search of his office and home.
Vanessa had given them access to a family storage account.
Inside it, investigators found payments to the false accountant, equipment used to create the fabricated video, and records showing Richard had secretly financed Marcus’s takeover.
Marcus had never been the architect.
He had been the public face.
Richard looked at his daughter through the glass doors. Vanessa stood in the corridor under police supervision.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“You betrayed your own father,” Richard said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“You said Isabella would sign the statement and leave. You never said anything about a fire or a child.”
“I protected you.”
“You used me.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You would still be begging Isabella for a place at her table if I had not created an opportunity for you.”
Vanessa stepped back as though he had struck her with the words.
Isabella felt no triumph. Vanessa had betrayed her willingly. But now she understood that Vanessa had spent her entire life seeking approval from a man who viewed every person as a tool.
Richard turned toward Lorenzo.
“You think Elena’s daughter will thank you when she learns the truth?”
“What truth?”
“That your father found her before you did.”
Lorenzo froze.
Richard continued.
“The child was never missing. She was hidden under a new name and raised with money from Halcyon.”
“Where?”
Richard smiled.
“You have met her many times.”
Isabella felt the room tighten around her.
“Who is she?”
“Marcus knows.”
“Where is Marcus?”
Richard glanced toward the ballroom clock.
“He should be reaching her now.”
At that moment, every television screen in the room changed.
A live video appeared.
Marcus stood inside a small private airport terminal.
Beside him was the mysterious accountant wearing the silver bird pendant.
Between them sat the locked metal box.
Isabella looked toward the table where the box had been placed earlier.
It was gone.

Marcus spoke directly into the camera.
“Bring Elena’s ledger to Hangar Nine, or the last proof of her daughter’s identity leaves the country forever.”
