Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE BESIDE THE LAKEThe Moretti medical residence had been abandoned for fifteen years.

It stood above Lake Geneva behind iron gates covered in winter vines. The stone walls were pale with age, and several windows had been sealed from the inside.
No staff waited for them.
No security system requested identification.
The front door opened when Clara placed her hand against an old brass panel.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and antiseptic.
“This was never only a residence,” Isabella said.
Lorenzo looked along the corridor.
“It treated people whose names could not appear in hospital records.”
“Politicians?”
“Witnesses. Diplomats. Family members threatened by kidnapping.”
“And secret births,” Clara added.
They found the nursery on the second floor.
Two small beds stood against opposite walls.
Above one bed was the letter L.
Above the other was the letter A.
Clara touched the first letter.
“Lucia.”
Isabella looked toward Lorenzo.
“What did the second name begin with?”
He did not answer.
Evelyn pulled away a sheet covering an old cabinet. Inside were infant clothes, medical instruments, and hundreds of undeveloped film canisters.
A projector stood at the center of the room.
Isabella inserted the newest reel.
The image flickered across the wall.
Elena appeared, younger than Isabella had ever seen her. She was sitting in the nursery holding two newborn babies.
A doctor spoke from behind the camera.
“For the protected record, state their names.”
Elena looked down at the children.
“Lucia Elena Bell.”
She kissed the first baby.
Then she touched the second.
“Aurelia Rose Bell.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“Aurelia,” Clara whispered.
The film continued.
A man entered the frame.
Richard Crane.
He appeared almost twenty years younger but wore the same controlled expression.
“Elena,” he said, “the board has agreed that one child may remain under Bell protection.”
“One?”
“The succession agreement cannot recognize twins.”
“They are not assets.”
“The Bellavere structure was written before either of us was born.”
“They are my daughters.”
Richard stepped closer.
“If both children live publicly, the Bell and Moretti claims divide permanently. H-9 will activate its emergency succession protocol.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means neither family controls the hotel.”
“Then who does?”
Richard glanced toward the camera.
“The trustee who removes the conflict.”
The film ended.
Isabella turned toward Lorenzo.
“You knew Aurelia’s name.”
“I learned it that night.”
“Why cover it?”
“Because Richard spent eighteen years searching for any record proving she survived.”
A sound came from the ground floor.
The front door closed.
Evelyn reached inside her coat.
Footsteps climbed the staircase.
A woman appeared in the nursery doorway.
She wore Elena’s missing wedding ring.
“You found my name,” she said.
She looked to be in her early thirties, too young to be Elena’s second daughter.
Clara stared at her.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled.
“I am the reason Aurelia could never return herself.”
Then she placed a bloodstained passport on the floor.
The photograph belonged to a woman who looked almost identical to Clara at thirty-five.

The name read:
AURELIA ROSE BELL.
