THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 31 / 40

Chapter 31 - SAMUEL BELLClara and Aurelia stood side by side.

Samuel looked at them as though he had waited his entire life for that moment.

“My daughters.”

Clara did not move.

Aurelia did.

She crossed the chamber and struck him across the face.

“You left us.”

Samuel accepted the blow.

“I did.”

“You raised me through strangers, false names, and locked houses.”

“I believed Richard would kill you.”

“He still found us.”

“Yes.”

“Then all your secrecy accomplished nothing.”

“It kept you alive long enough to hate me.”

Aurelia’s eyes filled with tears.

Clara remained beside Isabella.

“What did you mean when you said the download was incomplete?”

Samuel removed a small device from his coat.

“The archive records are encrypted through living biometric trustees. Thomas copied the files, but he cannot open them unless he controls the trustees.”

Richard looked toward the twins.

“Then we take them.”

Samuel pressed a button.

The lighthouse doors sealed.

Thomas aimed his gun.

Serena raised hers.

Neither fired.

“You built a trap,” Isabella said.

Samuel nodded.

“I needed Richard, Thomas, the ring, and both succession terminals in one place.”

“You used us too,” Clara said.

“I tried to keep you away.”

“You sent the hotel card.”

“No.”

Everyone became still.

“I did not enter the presidential suite,” Samuel continued. “I did not contact Marcus after the transfer.”

“Someone used your identity,” Isabella said.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Samuel looked at Thomas.

“The preservation network created a digital version of me using decades of recordings.”

The voice from H-9 had sometimes been Samuel.

Sometimes it had been the system.

“It can impersonate people,” Evelyn said.

“Not only through video,” Samuel replied. “It predicts what they would say.”

Thomas smiled.

“You speak as though that is evil. Governments have prevented wars using H-9 intelligence.”

“Governments have started wars using it too.”

Richard moved closer to the console.

“The archive cannot be destroyed.”

“No,” Isabella said. “But it can be taken away from you.”

She removed her wedding ring and placed it against the original terminal.

The two systems connected.

Adrian’s voice came through the radio.

“I have access.”

The elected-stewardship protocol appeared on the lighthouse monitors.

It required unanimous consent.

Clara accepted.

Aurelia accepted.

Lorenzo accepted.

Isabella accepted.

Marcus remained.

Richard laughed.

“Your husband will never surrender his claim.”

A new video window opened.

Marcus sat inside the detention center.

Adrian had arranged a secure legal connection.

Marcus looked at Isabella.

“What do I receive?”

“The chance to testify truthfully.”

“That is not enough.”

“You receive nothing else.”

“Then no.”

Isabella met his eyes.

“The hotel was never yours.”

His face tightened.

“It could have been.”

“No. Even if you had taken the title, you would have spent every day afraid someone would discover you did not deserve it.”

Marcus looked toward the documents on his table.

“And you deserve it?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

“That is why no single person should own it.”

For a long moment, Marcus said nothing.

Then he pressed his fingerprint to the consent panel.

MARCUS VALE — CONSENT VERIFIED.

The terminal began transferring Bellavere control into elected stewardship.

Richard reached for the emergency switch.

Vanessa’s voice came over the radio.

“Do it, Father, and I release every private recording I have of you.”

She had survived surgery.

Richard froze.

The stewardship transfer reached ninety-nine percent.

Then the system rejected it.

ADDITIONAL PRIMARY CLAIMANT DETECTED.

Someone else carried a legal claim.

The name appeared.

ISABELLA SOFIA BELL.
