Chapter 10 - the exchange at hangar nine

The private airport was forty minutes from the Bellavere.
Lorenzo wanted police tactical units to surround the terminal. Isabella refused.
“If Marcus sees them first, he destroys whatever is inside the box.”
“He may destroy it anyway.”
“He wants the ledger.”
“He wants leverage.”
“He already has it.”
Isabella held Elena’s leather ledger against her chest.
Lorenzo studied her.
“You are not going inside alone.”
“He asked for me.”
“He asked for the ledger.”
“Then I am the person who can carry it.”
They compromised.
Isabella entered Hangar Nine with no visible security. Lorenzo and the investigators remained close enough to intervene.
The hangar lights were dim.
A private jet waited with its stairs lowered. Marcus stood beside a black car. The mysterious accountant remained near the plane, holding the metal box.
Up close, the woman appeared to be in her late thirties. Her dark hair was pulled tightly behind her head. Her face was unfamiliar, but her eyes reminded Isabella of someone.
Elena.
Not from memory, but from photographs.
Marcus opened his arms.
“My wife came to negotiate.”
“I am not your wife anymore.”
“Legally, you are.”
“Not for long.”
He glanced at the ledger.
“Did your father tell you how many lives that book can destroy?”
“He told me enough.”
“No, he told you the version that protects him.”
The woman beside the plane spoke.
“Stop wasting time.”
Her voice was the same one Isabella had heard on the accountant’s call.
Isabella looked at her pendant.
“Are you Elena’s daughter?”
The woman’s face revealed nothing.
“Give us the ledger.”
“Open the box first.”
Marcus laughed.
“You still think you are in charge.”
“I own the hotel you planned to celebrate in tonight.”
“You own a building full of frightened employees and frozen accounts.”
“I also have the evidence Richard Crane used you.”
Marcus’s smile faded.
“You believe I did not know?”
“You knew he was manipulating you?”
“I knew he thought he was.”
The woman stepped toward him.
“Marcus.”
He ignored her.
“Richard wanted the ledger destroyed. Adrian wanted money. Vanessa wanted status. Your father wanted the past buried. Everyone wanted something.”
“And you?”
“I wanted freedom from the Moretti name.”
“You married me for it.”
“I married you because I loved you.”
For a moment, the answer sounded genuine.
Then Marcus continued.
“But love becomes humiliating when everyone assumes your success came from your wife’s father.”
“You stole from me because people knew the truth?”
“I built the Bellavere.”
“You managed it. Hundreds of people built it.”
“I made it profitable.”
“And that was not enough because my name remained above yours.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“You never understood what it was like to walk into a room and watch people look past you for Lorenzo.”
Isabella’s voice remained steady.
“So you decided to become him.”
The words landed harder than anger.
Marcus looked away.
The woman reached for the ledger.
Isabella pulled it back.
“Open the box.”
The woman removed the silver bird pendant and inserted it into the second lock. Lorenzo’s brass key was already inside the first.
Both locks turned.
The lid opened.
Inside were original Bellavere share certificates, a sealed envelope, and a small glass vial containing a strand of hair.
A label identified it as belonging to Elena’s daughter.
There was also a photograph of the child at age six.
Isabella recognized the face.
Not the woman standing beside Marcus.
Someone else.
A person Isabella had seen almost every day for years.
Before she could speak, Marcus grabbed the sealed envelope.
The woman seized his arm.
“That is not yours.”
“You said the documents would clear my name.”
“I said they would expose the Morettis.”
Marcus tore open the envelope.
A single legal declaration fell into his hand.
He read the first line.
His face changed.
“This cannot be right.”
The hangar doors opened behind Isabella.
Police vehicles entered.
Marcus turned toward the jet.
The woman pulled the metal box away from him and ran toward the side exit.
Marcus followed.
Isabella looked down at the child’s photograph again.
