THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 23 / 40

Chapter 23 - THE GUARDIAN’S CHOICEAdrian had spent his life preparing for a role he never wanted.

His father taught him the Bellavere charter before he taught him contract law. He had been instructed to observe Aurelia as a child and later Isabella as the Moretti heir.

“Was our friendship part of your assignment?” Isabella asked.

“At first.”

“And afterward?”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Afterward, I stayed because you trusted me.”

“You helped Marcus forge my signature.”

“I provided an old sample. I did not know he had technology capable of reproducing your face and voice.”

“You authorized the Halcyon transfers.”

“Richard threatened Aurelia and Elena.”

Aurelia looked at him.

“You never told me that.”

“I believed the less you knew, the safer you were.”

She gave a bitter laugh.

“That sentence seems to belong to every man in this family.”

Lorenzo accepted the insult in silence.

Adrian explained that the active guardian could initiate one of three outcomes.

Return the Bellavere to the Bell heirs.

Restore Moretti control.

Or end individual ownership through elected stewardship.

“The third option requires unanimous consent from every living primary claimant,” he said.

“Clara, Aurelia, Isabella, and Lorenzo,” Evelyn said.

“And the current marital claimant.”

Isabella’s expression changed.

“Marcus.”

“Until the divorce is final, the charter recognizes him through you.”

“He will never agree.”

“He might if the alternative is prosecution under the H-9 evidence.”

“That is coercion.”

“It is negotiation,” Lorenzo said.

Isabella looked sharply at him.

“No. Marcus will choose freely, or the decision will remain vulnerable forever.”

Aurelia stepped forward with Elena in her arms.

“I will agree to stewardship only if H-9 is not controlled by the hotel board.”

“Who controls it?” Clara asked.

“An independent archive commission.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And the fire records become public.”

“After the victims’ families are notified,” Isabella said.

“And protected.”

Lorenzo looked around the chamber.

“You have all decided the future of the hotel.”

“No,” Isabella said. “We have designed a proposal.”

She faced him.

“You still have to choose.”

Lorenzo touched the old brass key in his pocket.

For decades, he had treated control as protection.

Now he removed the key and placed it on the terminal.

“I choose to stop hiding what our family did.”

Clara placed the silver pendant beside it.

Aurelia removed Elena’s wedding ring.

Isabella added her own ring.

Four symbols of inheritance rested together.

The terminal activated.

PRIMARY CLAIMANTS RECOGNIZED.

One space remained empty.

MARCUS VALE — CONSENT PENDING.

Before they could leave, a warning appeared.

ARCHIVE BREACH IN PROGRESS.

Someone outside the hotel was downloading H-9 files.

Adrian checked the access log.

The user credential belonged to Richard Crane.

But Richard was still in custody.

The download destination was the Bellavere ballroom.

A gala had been scheduled without Isabella’s approval.

Its host was Vanessa Crane.
