Chapter 30 - THE FIRST BELLAVEREThe first Bellavere had stood on the coast nearly a century earlier.
Official history claimed it was destroyed in a landslide.
Samuel said the truth was different.
The original building had been dismantled after its owners discovered the land concealed an underground communications center constructed during wartime.
The current Bellavere inherited the name, charter, and archive.
But one part of the first hotel remained.
A stone lighthouse on an isolated peninsula.
Thomas Reed was traveling there with Richard’s signet ring.
“If he connects the ring to the original terminal, he can copy the entire archive before H-9 seals,” Samuel said.
“Where are you?” Clara asked.
“Near the peninsula.”
“Why will you not show yourself?”
“Because someone with access to H-9’s facial recognition is listening.”
Isabella looked at Serena.
“Can we trust the voice?”
Serena hesitated.
“We have used the same encryption for years.”
“That does not answer the question.”
Samuel spoke again.
“You should not trust me merely because I say I am your father.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Then give us something real.”
He described the night of Clara’s sixth birthday. Elena had hidden a silver music box inside the Bellavere kitchen. Clara remembered the melody but not the event.
Samuel hummed four notes.
Clara began crying.
“It is him.”
They traveled to the peninsula in two vehicles.
Aurelia left Elena under police protection with Mara.
Vanessa remained in surgery.
Adrian stayed at the Bellavere to delay the archive release.
Isabella, Lorenzo, Clara, Aurelia, Evelyn, and Serena continued to the lighthouse.
The storm began before they reached the coast.
The lighthouse stood above black cliffs, its lamp long extinguished.
Inside, a spiral staircase descended beneath sea level.
They found Thomas at the bottom.
Richard’s signet ring had been inserted into an ancient console.
Archive files streamed across several monitors.
Thomas was not alone.
Richard Crane stood beside him.
He had escaped custody during the hotel lockdown using transfer documents created by Thomas.
Vanessa had been right.
Her father had planned every failure as another route to freedom.
Richard smiled when he saw Lorenzo.
“Your family always arrives after the important decision.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“You ordered Elena’s death.”
“My order was to stop her from accessing H-9.”
“You knew the fire doors would lock.”
“I knew the system would protect itself.”
“Seven people died.”
“Seven people against the collapse of every institution tied to those files.”
Clara stared at him.
“My mother was one of the seven.”
Richard looked at her without regret.
“Your mother chose the archive over her children.”
Aurelia moved toward him.
Isabella caught her arm.
Thomas activated the final transfer.
DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.
Then another voice came from the darkness behind Richard.
“Not complete.”
An elderly man stepped into the light.
