Chapter 33 - THE FATHER WHO CHOSELorenzo fell against the terminal.

Isabella caught him before he reached the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Samuel tackled Thomas.
Serena kicked the gun away.
Police teams entered through the upper stairwell, guided by Adrian’s signal.
Richard was arrested again.
Thomas was dragged away shouting that the archive belonged to history.
Lorenzo barely remained conscious.
Isabella pressed both hands against his wound.
“Stay with me.”
He looked at Samuel.
“You wanted to know whether I would choose the hotel or the child.”
Samuel knelt beside him.
“I never asked you to prove anything.”
“You did every time you stayed hidden.”
Paramedics carried Lorenzo up the lighthouse stairs.
The storm prevented helicopter transport, so Isabella rode with him by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
Samuel, Clara, and Aurelia followed.
Lorenzo survived surgery.
The bullet had missed his heart by less than an inch.
Isabella sat beside him when he woke.
“You stepped in front of me,” she said.
“I stepped in front of a bullet.”
“Do not joke.”
“It was a poor joke.”
She held his hand.
“You knew I might not be your biological daughter.”
“I knew Sofia had hidden something about your birth.”
“And you never asked?”
“I asked once.”
“What did she say?”
“That love sometimes begins with a lie and becomes true through everything that follows.”
Isabella looked away to hide her tears.
Lorenzo tightened his fingers around hers.
“I should have demanded the truth. But I was afraid the answer would give someone the power to take you from me.”
“That is what everyone in this family does. They hide the truth and call it protection.”
“Yes.”
“Will you stop?”
“Yes.”
She looked back at him.
“Even when the truth makes you look guilty?”
“Especially then.”
Outside the room, Samuel waited.
Isabella met him in the corridor.
“You are my biological father,” she said.
“Yes.”
“That does not make you my parent.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to appear after thirty years and expect a place in my life.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I did not come to ask for forgiveness.”
“Why did you come?”
“To make sure H-9 could no longer decide which of my daughters deserved to exist.”
For the first time, Isabella believed him.
Not completely.
But enough to continue listening.
Samuel handed her a sealed letter from Sofia.
“I promised to give you this only after the succession system was dismantled.”
Inside, Sofia had written:
Lorenzo is the father who chose you every day.
Samuel is the father whose blood you carry.
Neither fact cancels the other.
You are not required to belong to anyone merely because they helped create you.
Isabella folded the letter carefully.
At the bottom was one final instruction.
Do not trust the stewardship charter until you find the missing employee vote.
Isabella looked toward the hospital window.
May you like
The hotel had changed hands again.
But the people Elena believed should own it had not yet been asked.
