THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 7 / 40

Chapter 7 - the child carried from the fire

The photograph was dated October 14, eighteen years earlier.

The official report stated that the Bellavere fire began at 1:12 a.m. and burned through the eastern wing for nearly three hours. Seven people died, including Elena Moretti.

Lorenzo had always said he arrived after the fire department.

The photograph proved otherwise.

He had been inside the hotel.

He had been carrying Elena’s child.

Isabella held the image beneath the office light.

“You knew she existed.”

Lorenzo closed the door.

The investigators remained outside.

“I knew for less than an hour.”

“That is not an answer.”

Lorenzo sat down slowly.

“Your aunt called me shortly after midnight. She said someone had discovered the child and was threatening to take her.”

“Who?”

“She would not say.”

“What happened when you arrived?”

“The eastern corridor was already filling with smoke. Elena gave me the baby and told me to leave through the service stairs.”

“And you did?”

“Yes.”

“Where did you take her?”

“To a clinic owned by a family friend.”

“What happened after that?”

Lorenzo looked older than he had on the hotel steps.

“By morning, the child was gone.”

“Gone?”

“The doctor said a legal guardian had arrived with documents signed by Elena. He believed the man was Samuel Bell’s brother.”

“Did you search for her?”

“For years.”

“Why did you tell everyone Elena had no child?”

“Because whoever took the baby had already killed to hide her.”

Isabella’s anger paused.

“You believe the fire was deliberate.”

“I know it was.”

“Who started it?”

“I could never prove it.”

“And Grandfather?”

“He ordered me to stop searching. He said pursuing the child would bring another attack against the family.”

“Did he take the hotel share that belonged to her?”

“He placed Elena’s share inside the Halcyon trust.”

Isabella stared.

“The dormant account Marcus reopened.”

“Yes.”

“Then the final asset is Elena’s ownership share.”

“Possibly.”

“And if her daughter is alive?”

“She would have a legitimate claim.”

Isabella placed the photograph on the desk.

“Why did Marcus need my identity to transfer it?”

“Because after your grandfather died, you became the temporary trustee of Halcyon.”

“I was never told.”

“The role was hidden in the estate schedule.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“Another document everyone decided I did not need to read.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No. You were deciding for me.”

Lorenzo lowered his head.

For once, he did not argue.

Police searched the loading dock and surrounding streets, but Marcus had escaped through an underground service tunnel connected to a neighboring building.

Someone had prepared the route in advance.

The hotel’s internal cameras had been disabled for exactly ninety seconds.

Vanessa was detained for questioning. She surrendered her phones and provided investigators with a private messaging account Marcus had used.

Most conversations had been deleted.

One message remained.

Tomorrow, Isabella will bring Lorenzo to the hotel. Once he opens the twenty-first floor, the transfer becomes permanent.

The sender used the initials E.B.

Elena Bell.

Or the name of someone pretending to be her.

Isabella returned to the hidden floor shortly before dawn.

The metal box still sat on the desk.

Lorenzo’s brass key remained in the first lock.

They needed the silver pendant for the second.

Isabella studied the engraved sentence again.

The hotel belongs to the one who preserves its people.

She suddenly remembered Clara Bennett, the real housekeeper whose name had been used by the mysterious accountant.

Clara had worked on the night of the fire.

Isabella called her.

Clara answered sleepily from Oregon.

“Miss Isabella?”

“I am sorry to call so early. Do you remember a silver bird pendant?”

The line became silent.

“Who showed it to you?” Clara asked.

“A woman using your name.”

Clara’s breathing changed.

“Leave the hotel.”

“Why?”

“Because the bird was Elena’s private seal.”

“Did Elena give it to someone?”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

Clara whispered the answer.

“To the woman who carried her daughter out of the building.”

Isabella looked at Lorenzo.

May you like

“That was my father.”

“No,” Clara said. “Your father carried an empty blanket.”
