THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 20 / 40

Chapter 20 - ADRIAN’S INHERITANCEAdrian was moved from police protection before Isabella returned from Geneva.

The transfer order appeared legitimate.

It carried the signature of the lead investigator, a court authorization, and Lorenzo’s private security code.

All three were forged.

The vehicle carrying Adrian was found abandoned outside the city.

There was no blood and no sign of struggle.

Only a message scratched into the rear window.

THE GUARDIAN HAS ACCEPTED HIS ROLE.

Isabella refused to believe Adrian had joined the conspiracy willingly.

“He cooperated against Richard,” she said.

“After helping Marcus for months,” Evelyn replied.

“He was frightened.”

“He was paid.”

“He also left a warning for me.”

“Perhaps every warning brought you exactly where he wanted.”

Clara listened silently.

“Adrian’s father helped hide the succession records,” she said. “Could guardianship pass through his family?”

Lorenzo nodded.

“The Cross firm wrote the original charter.”

“Then Adrian may have known all his life.”

“No,” Isabella said. “When he disappeared from the hotel, he left his passports and cash. He was trying to run.”

“Or making it appear that way.”

Back at the Bellavere, police searched Adrian’s office.

They found a childhood photograph hidden inside a legal textbook.

It showed Adrian at age seven standing beside a girl of the same age.

The girl’s face had been cut away.

On the back, someone had written:

A guardian must know the heir before the heir knows herself.

Clara studied the remaining outline.

“The girl was Aurelia.”

Lorenzo examined the location.

The photograph had been taken at the Geneva residence.

Adrian’s father had not merely represented Richard Crane.

He had placed his son near the hidden child.

A call arrived from the detention center.

Richard Crane wanted to speak to Isabella.

He sat behind reinforced glass with his hands cuffed to the table.

“You finally found Adrian’s purpose,” he said.

“Where is he?”

“Doing what his father trained him to do.”

“Protecting Aurelia?”

Richard laughed.

“The Cross family never protected heirs. They protected the succession mechanism.”

“What is H-10?”

“A room no owner can enter.”

“What is inside?”

“The future of the Bellavere.”

“Is the child there?”

Richard’s smile vanished.

“You think this is about a child?”

“She is three years old.”

“She is also the first verified descendant born after the twin succession conflict.”

Isabella felt cold.

“Elena is the next heir.”

“She is the only heir whose claim cannot be divided by the original charter.”

“You planned to control her.”

“I planned to prevent Samuel from controlling her.”

“By kidnapping her?”

“I did not take the child.”

“Who did?”

Richard leaned toward the glass.

“Ask the person who benefits if every adult claimant becomes legally disqualified.”

Isabella thought of Lorenzo’s revoked guardianship.

Clara’s concealed identity.

Aurelia’s disappearance.

Samuel’s staged death.

Adrian’s inherited role.

“Marcus?” she asked.

Richard shook his head.

“Marcus wanted the hotel.”

“Then who wants the heir?”

Richard looked toward the security camera.

“The woman who designed the entire conflict.”

When Isabella returned to the Bellavere, Evelyn Shaw had disappeared.

So had Clara.
