THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 3 / 40

Chapter 3 - the attorney who disappeared

When Lorenzo arrived, the rain had intensified.

He listened without interruption while Isabella explained the forged directive, the Halcyon transfers, and Adrian’s involvement.

Then he asked to see the accountant’s photographs.

He studied the reflected third figure longer than the documents themselves.

“Do you recognize the coat?” Isabella asked.

“No.”

“You hesitated.”

“I was examining the image.”

“Dad.”

Lorenzo locked the phone and handed it back.

“We deal with what we can prove.”

It was the answer he always gave when he did not want to reveal something.

The ownership clause was activated at 11:46 p.m.

Within minutes, Marcus lost access to every secured hotel system.

Lorenzo entered the lobby with Isabella beside him.

The guests moved away from Marcus as if his downfall were contagious.

Vanessa stood near the staircase, one hand pressed against the necklace.

Marcus approached Lorenzo.

“You cannot take control of a company based on a private disagreement.”

“This is not a private disagreement,” Lorenzo replied. “It is documented fraud.”

“The documents are legitimate.”

“Then you will enjoy explaining them to the board.”

Marcus turned toward Isabella.

“You called your father because you could not handle a marriage argument?”

“You forged my signature.”

“You gave me authority years ago.”

“I gave you authority to run the hotel, not steal it.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You think your father came here to rescue you? He came because he was waiting for an excuse to take back the Bellavere.”

Lorenzo stepped between them.

“The Bellavere never left the family.”

Hotel security officers entered from both corridors. This time, they surrounded Marcus.

Vanessa removed the necklace and placed it on the reception counter.

“I had nothing to do with the financial documents.”

Marcus looked at her sharply.

Isabella almost laughed.

Only an hour earlier, Vanessa had stood in the presidential suite as though she already owned it. Now she was preparing to abandon Marcus before the first investigation had even begun.

The board attorney called Lorenzo’s phone.

The entire lobby heard the announcement about the final asset transfer and the recipient connected to someone believed dead.

Marcus smiled.

That smile convinced Isabella the transfer mattered more than the hotel itself.

Lorenzo ended the call.

“Where is Adrian?”

Marcus shrugged.

“I have not seen him.”

“You used his authorization code less than eight hours ago.”

“Then perhaps you should ask him.”

Lorenzo turned to one of his security officers.

“Find Cross.”

The officer moved away immediately.

Marcus adjusted his cuffs.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not yet,” Lorenzo said.

“Then I am leaving.”

The head of hotel security blocked the entrance.

Lorenzo nodded toward the ballroom.

“You are attending your own board meeting.”

The gala guests were escorted into adjoining reception rooms while the Bellavere board gathered around the ballroom’s central table.

Isabella sat in the chair Marcus had occupied for ten years.

He remained standing.

The board attorney appeared on a video screen.

“We have confirmed that the final asset removed from Bellavere Holdings was not cash, land, or hotel equity.”

“What was it?” Isabella asked.

“A collection of sealed ownership certificates associated with the Halcyon Restoration Trust.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“What do those certificates control?”

“We do not know. The original descriptions were destroyed in the archive fire eighteen years ago.”

“The fire did not destroy every record,” Marcus said.

All eyes turned toward him.

Marcus smiled again.

“Your family simply never found the surviving copy.”

Lorenzo placed both hands on the table.

“You found it.”

“I found something.”

“And transferred it.”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

Marcus looked directly at Isabella.

“To the only person who has a stronger claim than you.”

The ballroom doors opened.

A security officer entered holding Adrian Cross’s abandoned briefcase.

“We found this in the underground garage. His car is still here, but Mr. Cross is gone.”

Inside the briefcase were two passports, fifty thousand dollars in cash, and a handwritten note addressed to Isabella.

She unfolded it.

I am sorry. Marcus was never the real danger. Ask your father what happened on the twenty-first floor.

Isabella looked across the table.

Lorenzo had already read the words from her expression.

“What happened there?” she asked.

May you like

He did not answer.

Above the ballroom ceiling, the sealed elevator continued rising.
