Chapter 21 - THE WOMAN WHO USED EVERYONEClara’s room showed no sign of forced entry.
Her security officer had received a message in Isabella’s name instructing him to leave the floor.
The message included Isabella’s voice and private code.
Another false identity.
On the bed lay the silver bird pendant.
Evelyn had left it behind.
A surveillance camera recorded Clara entering the hidden elevator at 2:14 a.m. Evelyn walked beside her. Neither appeared restrained.
“They went willingly,” Lorenzo said.
“Or Clara believed Evelyn was taking her to Aurelia,” Isabella replied.
The elevator record showed access to H-9.
After that, both women vanished.
There was no known exit from the chamber besides the main tunnel.
Mara, still recovering in Geneva, called Isabella.
“Evelyn contacted me.”
“What did she say?”
“She apologized.”
“For what?”
“For waiting too long to choose a side.”
“Which side?”
“She said the Bellavere had to be removed from every family that believed blood created ownership.”
That sounded like Elena’s words about preserving people.
But Evelyn had used Marcus, Richard, Vanessa, Clara, and Isabella to open H-9.
“She does not want the hotel,” Isabella said. “She wants to break its succession system.”
“And the child?” Mara asked.
“Leverage.”
Isabella entered H-9 with Lorenzo and police specialists.
One cabinet stood open.
Inside were personnel files for hundreds of Bellavere employees dating back nearly a century.
Another cabinet contained records of families supported by the Halcyon trust.
At the back was a narrow staircase leading downward.
It had not been visible before.
The stairs ended at a circular chamber.
Clara sat alone in the center.
She was unharmed.
“Where is Evelyn?” Isabella asked.
Clara looked toward the wall.
“She was never Miriam’s granddaughter.”
“Who is she?”
“The child of one of the employees killed in the fire.”
The wall opened.
Evelyn stepped forward holding no weapon.
“My father was the night engineer,” she said. “He discovered the fire before it spread. He could have saved everyone.”
“What stopped him?” Lorenzo asked.
“The emergency doors were remotely locked.”
“By Richard?”
“By the succession system.”
The chamber displayed an old automated report.
When unauthorized persons attempted to access H-9 eighteen years earlier, the system initiated containment procedures.
Fire doors closed.
Elevators stopped.
Seven people died.
“The Bellavere killed them to protect its secrets,” Evelyn said.
“A machine followed someone’s command,” Isabella replied.
“A command designed by your families.”
“Then expose it.”
“That is what I intend to do.”
“Where is the child?”
Evelyn looked at Clara.
“With her mother.”
“Aurelia is alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Clara answered.
“Inside H-10.”
The floor beneath them moved.
A circular platform descended.
At the bottom, they found the continuity chamber.
Aurelia Bell stood behind a glass wall holding her daughter.
Beside her stood Adrian Cross.
He pressed one hand against the emergency control.

“If this door opens incorrectly, H-9 will destroy every record inside.”
