THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 27 / 40

Chapter 27 - SOFIA’S SISTERThe woman was not Sofia.

Her name was Serena D’Angelo.

She was Sofia’s younger half-sister, separated from her family as a child and raised in Italy.

Isabella had never known she existed.

Serena lowered the rifle to the ground.

“I did not fire at you.”

“You were on the balcony,” Isabella said.

“I followed the shooter through the service passage.”

“Daniel saw your face.”

“He saw me open the passage after the shots.”

“Why run?”

“Because Lorenzo would have recognized me.”

Lorenzo stood several feet away, unable to look from her face.

“You attended Sofia’s funeral,” he said.

“From outside the gates.”

“Why did she never tell me about you?”

“Because I worked for Samuel.”

Clara stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

“Alive.”

Aurelia’s expression hardened.

“You told me he disappeared.”

“He did.”

“From whom?”

“From the Bellavere system.”

Serena explained that Samuel had spent decades fighting H-9’s predictive network. The system had been modernized repeatedly by the Cross legal family and Richard’s security companies.

“It selects the person most likely to preserve institutional control,” Serena said. “Then it creates pressure around that person.”

“Who is the current selection?” Isabella asked.

Serena looked at her.

“You.”

Isabella laughed without humor.

“I am trying to end hereditary ownership.”

“That is why it selected you.”

“The system wants reform?”

“The system wants survival. It does not care whether the Bellavere has an owner, board, trust, or elected stewardship. It only cares that H-9 remains active.”

Adrian looked toward the hotel.

“My father believed the archive was more important than the building.”

“Because the archive can control judges, investors, unions, families, and governments,” Serena said.

“Who was the real shooter?” Mara asked.

“An H-9 preservation agent.”

“How many?”

“We do not know.”

“Is Samuel one of them?” Clara asked.

Serena looked at her gently.

“Your father created the resistance against them.”

“Then take us to him.”

“He will not meet while the system tracks your movements.”

“How do we disable it?”

Serena pointed toward Isabella’s wedding ring.

“The tracking code Marcus mentioned is not passive. Every family object carries a piece of the H-9 authentication network.”

“The necklace,” Isabella said.

“The brass key, Elena’s pendant, both wedding rings, Richard’s signet, and the Cross guardian seal.”

Adrian touched the ring his father had left him.

“All of us brought the system’s keys together.”

“That was the plan,” Serena replied.

“Whose plan?”

“H-9’s.”

A sound came from beneath the garden.

The earth vibrated.

Inside the hotel, every door locked simultaneously.

The golden entrance lights turned red.

A message appeared across the exterior windows.

SUCCESSION CRISIS CONFIRMED.
