THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 18 / 40

Chapter 18 - THE DAUGHTER WHO DIED TWICEThe woman in the doorway introduced herself as Mara Voss.

She claimed to have served as Aurelia Bell’s private security officer.

“Where is my sister?” Clara asked.

Mara looked at the blood on the passport.

“Missing.”

“Alive?”

“She was alive three days ago.”

“Was the child in the nursery hers?”

“Yes. Her name is Elena.”

Clara lowered herself onto the edge of one of the nursery beds.

She had discovered a sister and a niece within minutes.

Now both might be prisoners.

Isabella kept her attention on Mara.

“You sent the video call from H-9.”

“Yes.”

“You demanded something Lorenzo had hidden.”

“The photograph.”

“Why?”

“Because Aurelia believed the original photograph contained more than two names.”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“It contains nothing else.”

Mara took the image from Isabella and held it toward the light.

“The black ink was applied after the photograph was developed.”

She removed a small bottle from her coat and brushed liquid across the back.

The ink faded.

Beneath Aurelia’s name appeared a line no one had noticed.

Second legal guardian: Lorenzo Moretti.

Clara looked at him.

“You were her guardian.”

“On paper. I never saw her after the fire.”

Mara’s expression hardened.

“Aurelia believed you abandoned her.”

“I searched for her.”

“She spent her childhood being told that the Moretti family chose Lucia and sacrificed her.”

“Who told her that?”

“Samuel Bell.”

Clara rose.

“My father raised Aurelia?”

“Not exactly.”

Mara explained that Aurelia had been taken from the Geneva residence shortly after birth. Samuel traced her to an organization that operated hidden identities for wealthy families. To recover the child, he agreed to disappear publicly.

“The boating accident,” Isabella said.

“Was staged. Samuel became the guardian of Aurelia’s new identity.”

“Why did he not recover Clara too?” Lorenzo asked.

“He believed Lucia was safe with Elena.”

Clara’s voice broke.

“Then the fire happened.”

Mara nodded.

“For years Samuel believed Lucia had died with her mother. Richard ensured every record said so.”

“Where is Samuel now?” Isabella asked.

“He disappeared three weeks ago.”

“The man in the presidential suite?”

“Not Samuel.”

“Who was he?”

“I do not know.”

Mara walked toward the projector and removed another reel hidden beneath its base.

“This was delivered to Aurelia before she vanished.”

The film showed Samuel Bell sitting alone in a dark room.

He was elderly, with white hair and a scar across his palm.

“If this recording reaches my daughters,” he said, “then Richard Crane has learned the truth about the succession protocol.”

Samuel lifted a document.

“The Bellavere cannot legally pass to either twin while both bloodlines remain active. Control transfers to the neutral guardian named at their birth.”

The camera moved closer to the document.

The guardian’s name was visible.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Clara looked at her uncle.

“You did not inherit the hotel because Elena died.”

Isabella understood first.

“You inherited it because both daughters were hidden.”

Mara turned toward the corridor.

“And if Richard proves Lorenzo intentionally concealed them, control passes again.”

“To whom?” Evelyn asked.

The house lights went out.

Samuel’s voice continued from the projector.

“To the person appointed to punish a dishonest guardian.”

A gunshot shattered the nursery window.

Mara fell.

Across the lake, a boat sped away into the darkness.
