THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 26 / 40

Chapter 26 - THE ROOM HER MOTHER CHOSERoom 1908 had been assigned to Isabella after she left the presidential suite.

She had assumed the selection was random.

Hotel records showed otherwise.

The room had been permanently reserved for her mother, Sofia Moretti, beginning eight years earlier.

Sofia never officially stayed there.

Yet the electronic lock recorded dozens of entries using an unregistered master card.

Isabella searched the room with Adrian and police technicians.

They found nothing until Clara noticed scratches beneath the writing desk.

The desk was bolted to the floor.

When officers removed it, they discovered a narrow compartment.

Inside were letters, photographs, and an audio recorder.

The first letter was addressed to Isabella.

My daughter,

If you find this, the Bellavere has begun choosing its next guardian.

Do not let it choose for you.

Isabella continued reading.

Sofia had learned that H-9 was not only an archive. Its original designers had created predictive files on every potential heir. The system collected financial records, personal weaknesses, relationships, and private behavior.

It did not merely preserve succession.

It manipulated it.

Marcus had received anonymous information about Halcyon and the hidden floor.

Richard had received warnings that Samuel was alive.

Evelyn had received proof that the fire doors were locked by the system.

Each person had been given enough truth to push them toward conflict.

“An automated system created the conspiracy?” Clara asked.

“Someone controls the system,” Adrian said.

The audio recorder contained Sofia’s final conversation with Samuel Bell.

His voice matched the man from the H-9 call.

“You cannot rescue both daughters without activating the conflict,” Samuel said.

Sofia replied, “Then we destroy the succession protocol.”

“It has already selected the next guardian.”

“Who?”

“Our children.”

There was a long silence.

Isabella stopped the recording.

“Our children?”

Lorenzo stared at the device.

Sofia and Samuel had spoken as though they shared children.

Clara’s face changed.

“Could your mother have helped raise Aurelia?”

Adrian examined the letters.

One photograph showed Sofia holding a young girl beside Lake Geneva.

The girl was Aurelia.

Another showed Samuel standing beside them.

On the back, Sofia had written:

We protected her together.

Isabella forced herself to continue the recording.

Samuel said, “Aurelia believes you are her mother.”

“I never told her that.”

“You allowed her to believe it.”

“I protected Elena’s child.”

“And abandoned your own.”

The recording ended.

Lorenzo stepped backward.

“What did he mean by her own?”

A hidden panel inside the compartment opened automatically.

It contained a medical record.

Patient: Sofia Moretti.

Procedure: Twin embryo transfer.

Genetic donors: Elena Moretti and Samuel Bell.

Gestational carrier: Sofia Moretti.

Isabella read the date.

The procedure had occurred one year before Clara and Aurelia were born.

Sofia had carried Elena’s twins.

Legally and genetically, they belonged to Elena and Samuel.

But Sofia had given birth to them.

Clara whispered, “Your mother was our birth mother.”

The room telephone rang.

Isabella answered.

A woman’s voice said:

“Now you understand why Sofia could never choose between you.”

“Who is this?”

“Come to the east garden.”

The line disconnected.

In the garden, beneath the damaged earth above H-9, stood the shooter from the balcony.

She had removed her mask.

She looked exactly like Isabella’s mother.
