THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 24 / 40

Chapter 24 - VANESSA’S LAST GALAVanessa had been released under supervised conditions that afternoon.

She was forbidden from entering the Bellavere.

Yet when Isabella reached the ballroom, hundreds of guests had already arrived.

Vanessa stood on the stage beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Behind her, a large screen displayed confidential H-9 documents.

Reporters filled the room.

Investors whispered among themselves.

Families connected to old payments stared at the names appearing one by one.

“Turn it off,” Isabella ordered.

The hotel technicians shook their heads.

The broadcast came from an external server.

Vanessa held a microphone.

“For years, the Moretti family presented itself as the protector of this hotel. Tonight, the public will see what protection really meant.”

Isabella walked onto the stage.

“You are exposing victims along with criminals.”

Vanessa’s eyes were red but steady.

“My father destroyed my life to preserve these secrets.”

“And now you are helping him.”

“He gave me the access code.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew you would never release the files.”

“We were preparing an independent commission.”

“Another private room. Another delay.”

Names continued scrolling.

One belonged to a former employee who had accepted money after her husband died in the fire.

The screen labeled the payment a bribe.

“It was compensation,” Clara said from the ballroom floor.

The reporters turned toward her.

“Context matters,” Isabella told Vanessa. “You are turning every payment into guilt.”

“My father said the truth should burn everything.”

“Your father is not seeking truth. He is creating enough chaos to escape accountability.”

Vanessa hesitated.

Isabella moved closer.

“He gave you a code he knew would lead back to you.”

“No.”

“He sacrificed you again.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Police entered carrying a new warrant.

Vanessa looked toward the screen.

Richard’s credential had routed the download through her personal device.

She would appear responsible for the entire breach.

Her face collapsed.

“He promised this would clear my name.”

“He has never protected your name.”

Vanessa lowered the microphone.

“How do I stop it?”

Adrian approached the control booth.

“The server requires the person who initiated the release.”

“My father.”

“Or the biometric key he used.”

Vanessa removed a ring from her finger.

Richard’s signet ring.

“He gave me this.”

Inside it was a small data chip.

Adrian inserted the chip into the terminal.

The broadcast stopped.

But not before one final file appeared.

It contained footage from the night of the fire.

Richard stood in the H-9 control room beside Adrian’s father.

A third man entered.

Lorenzo’s father.

He ordered the emergency doors locked.

Richard protested.

“There are still people inside.”

The elder Moretti replied:

“If Elena reaches the archive, we lose everything.”

The recording ended.

Lorenzo stood frozen beneath the chandeliers.

His father had not merely hidden the truth after the fire.

He had caused the deaths.

Vanessa dropped Richard’s ring.

Then a gunshot sounded from the balcony.

The bullet struck the screen behind Isabella.
