Chapter 19 - THE NEUTRAL GUARDIANThe bullet passed through Mara’s shoulder.

She survived, but the shooting proved someone had followed them to Geneva.
Swiss police surrounded the residence. The private flight crew was detained, and investigators found a tracking device beneath Lorenzo’s seat.
It had been manufactured by a security company once controlled by Richard Crane.
Richard was still in custody.
But his organization remained active.
While doctors treated Mara, Isabella studied the succession document from Samuel’s film.
The original Bellavere charter had been created after a conflict between the Moretti and Bell families. If an inheritance dispute threatened the property, a neutral guardian would temporarily control it.
Lorenzo had been named guardian of both twins.
If he knowingly concealed either child, the guardianship would be revoked.
The replacement guardian was listed in a sealed appendix held inside H-9.
“That is the file Marcus transferred,” Evelyn said.
“The succession file,” Isabella replied.
Clara stood at the nursery window.
“If Lorenzo’s authority is invalid, then every decision made after the fire could be challenged.”
“Not every decision,” Isabella said. “The hotel’s operating company is separate.”
“But the land?”
“Possibly.”
“H-9?”
“Almost certainly.”
Lorenzo remained near the projector.
“I should have disclosed Aurelia’s existence.”
“Yes,” Isabella said.
He looked at her.
“I had no proof she survived.”
“You had proof she was born.”
“I believed revealing it would lead Richard to her.”
“And hiding it allowed Richard to control the story.”
Lorenzo accepted the accusation without defending himself.
Clara turned.
“Did Grandfather know you were the neutral guardian?”
“Yes.”
“Is that why he transferred control to you?”
“He said it was the only way to protect the hotel.”
“Protect it for whom?”
Lorenzo had no answer.
Mara woke shortly before dawn.
Her first words were about Elena, Aurelia’s daughter.
“They moved the child,” she whispered.
“Where?” Isabella asked.
“Bellavere.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The nursery video was recorded in Geneva,” Mara continued. “But the crest above the bed was removable. Aurelia discovered the room had been reconstructed somewhere else.”
“Inside the hotel?” Clara asked.
“Beneath it.”
Isabella thought of the sealed cabinets in H-9.
“A nursery underground?”
“Not a nursery. A continuity chamber.”
“What does that mean?”
Mara swallowed painfully.
“A place built to protect an heir during war, kidnapping, or family collapse.”
Evelyn accessed the H-9 plans remotely.
One section had never appeared on their map.
A chamber designated H-10.
It could only be opened by the active guardian.
Lorenzo’s identity should have granted access.
Instead, the system rejected him.
GUARDIANSHIP REVOKED.
A second message appeared.
REPLACEMENT GUARDIAN RECOGNIZED.
Isabella read the name.
It was not Richard Crane.
It was not Marcus.
May you like
It was not Samuel Bell.
The replacement guardian was Adrian Cross.
