THE HOTEL WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 5 / 40

Chapter 5 - the woman in the uniform

The accountant escaped through a maintenance passage that opened into an alley behind the hotel.

Security searched the surrounding streets but found no trace of her.

Hotel employment records listed no one matching her description.

The uniform she wore belonged to housekeeping, but the badge carried the name Clara Bennett. The real Clara Bennett had worked at the Bellavere for thirty-two years and was currently visiting her daughter in Oregon.

Someone had created a false identity inside the hotel system.

Someone with administrative access.

Back in the hidden office, Isabella examined the photographs and documents while Lorenzo called investigators.

The birth certificate raised more questions than it answered.

Elena Moretti had apparently given birth in a private clinic outside Geneva. No child had ever been mentioned in family records, and no guardianship file appeared after Elena’s death.

Marcus had somehow discovered the child’s existence.

Or someone claiming to be that child.

“Could she own the hotel?” Isabella asked.

Lorenzo stood near the blackened fireplace.

“The Bellavere came through my mother’s family. Elena and I inherited equal interests.”

“If Elena had a daughter, then her share could have passed to the child.”

“Possibly.”

“Then Marcus was telling the truth. She might have a stronger claim than I do.”

“No. At most, she would have a competing claim. Your grandfather consolidated the title after the fire.”

“Did he do it legally?”

Lorenzo did not answer quickly enough.

Isabella closed the folder.

“You knew there might be another heir.”

“I knew there had been rumors.”

“What rumors?”

“That Elena had married Samuel Bell in secret.”

“And the baby?”

“I never heard about a baby.”

“Why would Grandfather hide his own grandchild?”

“Because Samuel Bell was not merely a man Elena loved.”

Lorenzo moved to the window overlooking the city.

“He was the son of our grandfather’s business enemy. The Bell family claimed the original hotel land had been taken from them decades earlier. Elena’s marriage could have united the claims or destroyed both families.”

“What happened to Samuel?”

“He died in a boating accident six months before the hotel fire.”

“Was it an accident?”

“The investigation said it was.”

“But you do not believe that.”

“I no longer know what to believe.”

A security officer entered carrying a small metal box found behind the office wall.

The box required two keys.

Lorenzo’s brass key opened the first lock.

The silver bird pendant likely opened the second.

The accountant had taken the pendant with her.

Isabella examined the lid. Engraved along its edge were the words:

The hotel belongs to the one who preserves its people.

Not the one who inherits its walls.

“That sounds like Grandfather,” Isabella said.

Lorenzo nodded.

The hotel manager called from downstairs.

Police had arrived to question Marcus about the forged documents. Vanessa was asking for immunity in exchange for information. Several board members were demanding access to the hidden floor.

Lorenzo instructed security to seal the elevator.

“We take the box home.”

“No,” Isabella said.

“This floor is not secure.”

“Neither is your house if Adrian helped Marcus.”

“Then we use the family vault.”

Isabella looked at the photographs of herself.

“Someone watched me from this room. I want to know who.”

Lorenzo’s phone rang.

The board attorney spoke urgently.

“We traced the recipient account.”

“Name?” Lorenzo asked.

“It is held by a charitable foundation registered in Switzerland. The listed director is Samuel Bell.”

Lorenzo turned pale.

“Samuel Bell is dead.”

“The foundation was updated three weeks ago using a valid biometric verification.”

Isabella approached.

“Whose biometric verification?”

The attorney hesitated.

“Yours, Miss Moretti.”

Isabella stared at the phone.

“That is impossible.”

“The system shows your face and voice approving the transfer.”

“I never approved anything.”

“Then someone created a convincing digital copy.”

Lorenzo’s gaze moved to the scanners and recording equipment around the hidden office.

Marcus had not only forged Isabella’s signature.

Someone had been collecting enough footage to recreate her identity.

The computer screen suddenly turned on.

A video began playing automatically.

Isabella appeared on the screen, seated inside the hidden office.

She looked directly into the camera and spoke with perfect clarity.

“My name is Isabella Moretti Vale, and I willingly surrender every claim to the Bellavere Grand.”

The woman in the video smiled.

May you like

It was Isabella’s face.

But the smile belonged to someone else.
