Chapter 22 - THE SISTER BEHIND GLASSClara approached the glass.

Aurelia looked like a younger version of her.
The same eyes.
The same shape of the mouth.
But where Clara’s expression carried patience, Aurelia’s held eighteen years of suspicion.
“Lucia,” Aurelia said through the speaker.
Clara placed her palm against the glass.
“You are alive.”
“So are you.”
The words contained both wonder and accusation.
The child in Aurelia’s arms woke and looked toward the strangers.
“This is Elena,” Aurelia said.
Clara’s eyes filled.
“My niece.”
“Your successor.”
Clara lowered her hand.
“She is a child, not a title.”
“That is what our mother said about us.”
Adrian stood beside the control panel.
He appeared exhausted.
“Evelyn brought Clara because the chamber requires both twins to authorize the new succession record.”
“What new record?” Isabella asked.
“One that dissolves the hereditary claim.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“H-9 can transfer Bellavere land into a permanent public-benefit trust.”
“You brought us here to give away the hotel?” Lorenzo asked.
“To remove it from families that burned people alive to preserve control.”
Isabella studied the control panel.
“What happens to the operating company?”
“It remains under its current board.”
“The employee trust?”
“Becomes the controlling beneficiary.”
Clara looked at Isabella.
It was close to what they had already begun building.
But Evelyn had kidnapped people, manipulated Marcus, forged identities, and risked lives to force the decision.
“You could have asked,” Isabella said.
“Would Lorenzo have agreed before his guardianship was revoked?”
“No,” Lorenzo admitted.
“Would Richard?”
“No.”
“Would Marcus?”
Isabella shook her head.
Evelyn looked toward the glass.
“The system required conflict. So I gave it conflict.”
“You let innocent people suffer,” Isabella said.
“The families created the weapon. I aimed it back at them.”
“And now you believe that makes you different?”
Evelyn’s expression tightened.
Aurelia spoke from behind the glass.
“I did not agree to destroy the hotel.”
Evelyn turned.
“You agreed that no family should control it.”
“I agreed that Elena should never become a prisoner of inheritance.”
“That is the same thing.”
“No.”
Adrian slowly moved his hand away from the emergency control.
“There is another option.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The twins can reject both hereditary succession and automatic dissolution.”
“What replaces them?” Clara asked.
“An elected stewardship.”
“Who votes?”
“Employees, recognized heirs, pension beneficiaries, and local trustees.”
Isabella understood.
“The hotel would belong to no individual.”
“It would belong to its charter.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“That leaves the system alive.”
“It changes the system,” Adrian replied.
“It leaves H-9 intact.”
“H-9 contains evidence that could imprison hundreds of people.”
“And information that could destroy innocent families,” Lorenzo said.
The child began crying.
Aurelia held her closer.
“We will not decide my daughter’s future while she is trapped behind glass.”
Adrian entered an override sequence.
The door opened.
No files were destroyed.
Evelyn looked at him with disbelief.
“You said the emergency system would activate.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed you to bring everyone together.”
Adrian stepped away from the controls.
“My family built the succession mechanism.”

He looked at Isabella.
“And I am the only person who knows how to dismantle it.”
