Chapter 6 - the confession that was never made

The false video lasted four minutes.
It included Isabella’s face, voice, mannerisms, and even the small movement she made with her left hand when she was nervous.
Whoever created it had studied her closely.
The recording claimed Isabella had learned that the hotel rightfully belonged to Elena Moretti’s child and had decided to surrender all ownership voluntarily. It also stated that Marcus had acted with her authorization to protect the hidden heir.
At the end, the false Isabella said:
“If my family challenges this decision, release the archive record from the night of the fire.”
The screen went black.
Lorenzo reached for the computer.
A countdown appeared.
FILE DELETION IN 60 SECONDS.
One security officer disconnected the network cable. Another removed the power source.
The countdown continued on battery power.
Isabella grabbed her phone and recorded the screen while Lorenzo searched for the storage drive.
The computer shut down at zero.
When they restarted it, every file was gone.
Only Isabella’s phone recording remained.
“This was built as insurance,” she said. “Marcus expected us to find this room.”
“He expected you to activate Article Twelve,” Lorenzo replied.
“Then losing the hotel was part of his plan.”
Lorenzo looked toward the locked metal box.
“Or the price of reaching something more valuable.”
Downstairs, Marcus sat in the manager’s office with two police investigators and his attorney.
He appeared calm when Isabella entered.
Vanessa sat in the adjoining room speaking to another investigator. Her mascara had run, and the diamond necklace was sealed inside an evidence bag.
Marcus smiled at Isabella.
“How was the twenty-first floor?”
“You knew we would find it.”
“I hoped you would.”
“Why?”
“Because your father has spent eighteen years pretending it does not exist.”
Lorenzo remained by the door.
Marcus leaned back.
“You should ask him why the fire doors were locked that night.”
Isabella looked at her father.
Lorenzo’s face revealed nothing.
“Stop trying to divide us,” she said.
“I do not need to. Your family did that long before I arrived.”
An investigator placed the forged directive on the desk.
“Mr. Vale, did you authorize this document?”
“My attorney prepared it.”
“Adrian Cross?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“I do not know.”
“You were seen entering the archive with him yesterday.”
“We discussed legal records.”
“You transferred twelve million dollars into a dormant trust.”
“With board authorization.”
“The board denies approving it.”
“Then the board should review its own signatures.”
The investigator opened another folder.
“We already did. Three members claim their signatures were copied.”
Marcus glanced toward Lorenzo.
“Forgery seems to be spreading through the building.”
Isabella understood his confidence.
Marcus believed the evidence against him could be discredited because the same system had created a false confession from her. If digital records, signatures, and biometric approvals could all be fabricated, every document became questionable.
“You arranged the fake video,” Isabella said.
“Prove it.”
“You collected photographs and recordings of me.”
“Prove it.”
“You worked with Adrian.”
“Finding a missing attorney is not my responsibility.”
Isabella leaned closer.
“Who received the final asset?”
Marcus’s smile faded slightly.
“You would not believe me.”
“Try.”
Before he could answer, Vanessa began shouting in the adjoining room.
“I want protection. He said nobody would be hurt.”
Marcus turned sharply toward the wall.
Isabella entered the other office.
Vanessa stood with both hands on the table.
“What did Marcus say would happen?” Isabella asked.
Vanessa looked at the evidence bag containing the necklace.
“He said you would leave the hotel willingly after the board statement.”
“You watched security throw me into the rain.”
“I did not know he would do that.”
“You wore my necklace while he did it.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears, but Isabella felt no sympathy.
“What did he promise you?”
“A position. Shares. A new life.”
“In exchange for what?”
Vanessa looked toward the wall separating them from Marcus.
“I introduced him to the woman from the twenty-first floor.”
“The accountant?”
“I do not know her real name.”
“How did you meet her?”
“She contacted me six months ago. She knew things about the Moretti family. She said Marcus could become one of the most powerful hotel owners in the country.”
“Why would she help him?”
“She was not helping him.”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“She was using him to open the sealed archive.”
A loud crash came from Marcus’s office.
When Isabella rushed back, Marcus’s chair was empty.
The window behind him stood open.
A rope descended toward the loading dock.
Marcus had escaped.
On the desk lay a photograph that had not been there before.
It showed Isabella’s aunt Elena on the night of the fire.

Beside her stood a young Lorenzo Moretti.
And in Lorenzo’s arms was a baby wrapped in a Bellavere hotel blanket.
