Chapter 40 - THE HOME THEY CHOSE

Two years later, the Carter family gathered at the lake.

The old Bellhaven property had been demolished.

In its place stood a small family house.

No secret rooms.

No underground archive.

No cameras.

No locked doors.

Just windows overlooking the water.

Noah ran across the grass.

Melissa watched him.

Daniel stood beside her.

“You happy?”

She smiled.

“I am.”

“Even after everything?”

“Because of everything.”

Daniel looked confused.

Melissa took his hand.

“We know what we almost lost.”

She looked toward Noah.

“That makes what we have now mean more.”

Sarah sat beneath a tree.

Henry was beside her.

Rebecca—one of the former Bellhaven survivors who had become part of their extended family—was setting the table.

Everyone was laughing.

Nobody was hiding.

Nobody was pretending.

Daniel looked across the lake.

For years, he had believed his family had been destroyed by secrets.

Now he understood something else.

Secrets had nearly destroyed them.

But truth brought them back.

Noah ran toward him.

“Dad!”

Daniel caught him.

“What?”

“Mom says dinner!”

Daniel laughed.

“Your mother is always right.”

Melissa called from the house.

“I heard that!”

Everyone laughed.

Daniel carried Noah back toward the family.

At the doorway, Melissa waited.

She looked at Daniel.

He looked at her.

No explanation was necessary.

She had survived.

He had survived.

Noah had survived.

And the people who had tried to control their lives had lost.

Not because the Carter family became stronger than Bellhaven.

But because they stopped letting Bellhaven define who they were.

Daniel looked at the house.

The lights were warm.

The door was open.

His mother was inside.

His wife was waiting.

His son was laughing.

For the first time, the Carter home contained no secrets worth fearing.

Only memories worth keeping.

Daniel stepped inside.

Melissa closed the door behind them.

Not to keep the world out.

May you like

But because, finally, they had a home worth coming back to.

THE END.
