Chapter 1 - The Rope Around His Ankle)

Noah Carter’s scream reached the front doors before Daniel Carter did.

It was not the angry cry of a toddler who had been denied a toy.

It was terror.

Raw, breathless terror.

Daniel had one hand on the brass handle of the villa’s front door when he heard the second scream.

“Daddy!”

Everything inside him went cold.

He shoved the door open.

His briefcase hit the marble before he even realized he had dropped it.

At the far end of the foyer, beneath a crystal chandelier worth more than most people’s homes, his two-year-old son was lying on his stomach.

A thin white cord had been tied around Noah’s right ankle.

And Evelyn Carter was pulling it.

Daniel stopped moving.

For one terrible second, his mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.

Evelyn stood near the bottom of the grand staircase in an elegant burgundy dress, both hands gripping the cord. Her face was flushed with anger.

Noah’s tiny fingers scraped helplessly across the gleaming marble.

His grey vest was twisted.

One shoe was missing.

His face was wet with tears.

Anna, the housekeeper, was sprawled beside an overturned mop bucket.

“Stop!” Anna screamed.

She scrambled to her knees and seized the cord.

“You’re hurting him!”

Evelyn spun toward her.

“You stay out of this!”

She shoved Anna hard enough that the young woman fell backward.

Then Evelyn planted the heel of her shoe against Anna’s shoulder and forced her down.

“Stay put, you useless bitch.”

Daniel did not remember crossing the foyer.

One moment he was at the door.

The next he was beside his son.

He grabbed the cord from Evelyn’s hands so violently that she stumbled.

“What the hell did you just say?”

Evelyn froze.

Her entire expression changed.

The cruelty vanished so quickly it was almost impressive.

“Daniel.”

He ignored her.

He dropped to his knees.

“Noah.”

The boy sobbed and immediately reached for him.

“Daddy.”

Daniel’s hands shook as he untied the cord.

There was already a red mark around Noah’s ankle.

The sight of it did something dangerous to him.

He lifted Noah against his chest.

His son clung to his neck with both arms, trembling so badly Daniel could feel it through the expensive wool of his suit.

“Who did this to my son?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Darling, calm down.”

Daniel slowly turned his head toward her.

She forced a smile.

“We were playing around.”

Daniel looked at the cord still lying on the floor.

Then at Anna’s reddening shoulder.

Then at Evelyn.

“Playing.”

“Yes.”

“With a rope around his ankle?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Behind him, footsteps thundered through the open front doors.

Two members of the villa’s private security staff entered.

Daniel had called them from the car less than a minute before arriving because the exterior cameras had suddenly gone offline.

At the time, he had assumed there was a technical problem.

Now he knew better.

“Mr. Carter?” one of them asked.

Daniel never took his eyes off Evelyn.

“Lock the gates.”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous.”

“No one leaves.”

Her face hardened.

“You’re embarrassing me in front of the staff.”

Daniel stared at her as though he had never seen her before.

“My son is bleeding.”

“He is not bleeding.”

Daniel looked down.

There was a tiny scrape on Noah’s palm where the marble had torn his skin.

Evelyn followed his gaze.

Her lips parted.

Daniel’s voice became frighteningly quiet.

“He is bleeding.”

Noah pressed his face against his father’s shoulder.

Daniel kissed his hair.

Then he looked at Anna.

“Tell me everything.”

Anna was breathing hard.

She looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn immediately kicked the metal mop bucket.

It shot across the foyer and slammed into the wall.

“Don’t listen to that lying bitch!”

Anna flinched.

Daniel did not.

“Evelyn.”

“What?”

“If you interrupt her again, security will remove you from this room.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I have never been more serious in my life.”

Anna slowly stood.

Her navy-and-white uniform was soaked from the spilled water.

Her hands were shaking.

“Sir…”

Daniel waited.

Anna glanced down at Noah.

Then back at Daniel.

“This isn’t the first time.”

The words seemed to change the air inside the foyer.

Evelyn went pale.

“Anna.”

Anna reached toward her apron.

“Shut your filthy mouth.”

Anna’s fingers slipped inside the front pocket.

Evelyn suddenly lunged.

Daniel caught her wrist before she could reach the housekeeper.

Evelyn gasped.

“Let me go!”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“Anna.”

Anna withdrew a small black object.

A memory card.

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?”

Anna’s voice dropped almost to a whisper.

“I copied what she deleted.”

Evelyn stopped struggling.

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time since he had returned home, she did not look angry.

She looked afraid.

“What did she delete?” Daniel asked.

Anna opened her mouth.

But Evelyn spoke first.

“You have no idea what that woman has done.”

Anna’s face changed.

Daniel noticed it immediately.

“What does she mean?”

“Nothing,” Anna whispered.

Evelyn laughed.

It was a strange sound.

Thin.

Desperate.

“You think she’s protecting Noah?”

Daniel turned toward her.

“She has been lying to you for months.”

“About what?”

Evelyn looked directly at Anna.

Then smiled.

“Ask her why your son calls her Mama when you’re not home.”

Daniel’s eyes moved to Anna.

Anna looked devastated.

“No.”

Evelyn’s smile widened.

“Go on.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Anna.”

Tears filled the housekeeper’s eyes.

“It isn’t what she’s making it sound like.”

Noah lifted his head from Daniel’s shoulder.

He saw Anna.

His tiny hand reached toward her.

“Mama Anna.”

The foyer fell silent.

Daniel stared at his son.

Then at the woman who had apparently been protecting him.

Then at his wife.

Evelyn slowly folded her arms.

“You came home at exactly the right time, darling.”

Daniel looked down at the memory card.

He had believed the worst thing waiting for him inside his house was the rope around his child’s ankle.

May you like

Within the next hour, he would discover that the rope was only the first piece of something that had begun long before Noah learned how to walk.

And someone inside the Carter villa had been preparing for Daniel to find out.
