Chapter 11 - Room 707)

The Stanton Hotel was evacuated quietly.
No alarms.
No panic.
Federal agents cleared three floors.
Daniel entered through a service corridor with Claire.
Room 707 stood at the far end.
Door slightly open.
No sound inside.
Claire raised one hand.
Agents moved.
They entered.
Empty.
The chair from Hale’s video sat near the window.
Rope on the floor.
Small blood stain.
No Evelyn.
No Hale.
Daniel walked toward the table.
A syringe lay there.
Beside it, Evelyn’s wedding ring.
Daniel stared.
Claire bagged it.
“There’s another room.”
A connecting door opened into 709.
Inside was a laptop.
Live video showed Noah asleep at the safe house.
Daniel’s blood froze.
“They have access to the cameras.”
Claire immediately called the protection team.
No answer.
“Move!”
They ran.
Daniel barely remembered the drive.
By the time they reached the safe house, the front door was open.
Two agents were unconscious.
Anna was gone.
Again.
Noah’s room was empty.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
The bed still warm.
A toy elephant on the floor.
“No.”
Claire grabbed him.
“Daniel.”
“No.”
“We will find him.”
Daniel pushed past her.
“NOAH!”
Nothing.
He ran through every room.
Kitchen.
Bathroom.
Closet.
Garage.
No child.
On the dining table was a phone.
It rang.
Daniel answered.
Hale.
“You should have stayed at the hotel.”
“If you touch him…”
“I already have.”
Daniel’s vision blurred.
“Where is my son?”
“With someone he knows.”
“Anna?”
“No.”
“Evelyn?”
A pause.
“Very good.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Evelyn had Noah.
Hale continued.
“She asked for him.”
“Why?”
“To prove she can still be useful.”
Daniel felt rage and confusion collide.
“Put her on.”
“No.”
“Then put Noah on.”
Hale laughed.
“You still think this is a negotiation.”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
She was tracing.
Keep him talking.
“What do you want?”
“Margaret.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
His mother had remained at Briar Glen under federal custody.
“Why?”
“She knows where Henry’s archive is.”
“And the key?”
“Bring it.”
“You said Margaret knows.”
“She knows the location. You have access.”
Daniel understood.
The archive required both.
“Where?”
Hale gave an address.
An abandoned psychiatric hospital outside Baltimore.
“Come at dawn.”
“Why wait?”
“Because I want you to spend the night imagining what Evelyn might do when Noah cries.”
The call ended.
Daniel threw the phone across the room.
It shattered against the wall.
Claire did not react.
“We have the address.”
“He wanted us to.”
“Yes.”
“Then we go now.”
“He said dawn.”
“I don’t care.”
Margaret was transported under guard.
When Daniel told her, she looked genuinely frightened.
“He has Noah.”
“Yes.”
“And Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“What?”
“Hale is recreating the original sequence.”
Daniel stared.
“Explain.”
“Bellhaven separated child subjects from the person they trusted most.”
“Why?”
“To create attachment transfer.”
Daniel’s voice went cold.
“He wants Noah to become dependent on Evelyn.”
“Or on Hale.”
“What happens if the child resists?”
Margaret did not answer.
Daniel grabbed the table.
“What happens?”
“Sedation. sensory isolation. repeated abandonment.”
Daniel nearly overturned the table.
Claire stepped between them.
“Daniel.”
He turned away.
His entire body shook.
Noah.
Two years old.
Calling for him.
He imagined red walls.
A locked door.
His mother’s song.
He understood now why his father had broken into Bellhaven years ago.
There were some doors a parent did not knock on.
They destroyed them.
Margaret spoke quietly.
“There may be another entrance.”
Daniel turned.
“How?”
“The hospital was connected to utility tunnels.”
Claire asked, “You know them?”
“I helped design them.”
Of course she had.
They left before midnight.
The abandoned St. Gabriel Psychiatric Hospital stood on eighty acres of dead woodland.
Federal tactical teams surrounded the perimeter.
Margaret guided Daniel and Claire through an old drainage channel.
At the tunnel entrance, she stopped.
“There is something you need to know before we enter.”
Daniel glared.
“I am done with secrets.”
“Hale is not the highest person in Bellhaven.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“He runs the medical work.”
“Who runs everything else?”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“The funding network.”
“Name.”
“I never knew the current director.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Henry knew.”
Daniel paused.
Margaret continued.
“Your father spent the last year of his life pretending to cooperate with them.”
“To infiltrate the network?”
“Yes.”
“And he discovered the director.”
“I believe so.”
“Then where is the name?”
“In his confession.”
The gold key.
Daniel looked at it.
“Where?”
Margaret touched the old concrete wall beside them.
“Not far from here.”
They entered.
The tunnel smelled of rust and standing water.
After seventy yards, they reached a stairwell.
Voices above.
Daniel heard a child crying.
Noah.
He surged forward.
Claire grabbed his vest.
“Wait.”
Daniel listened.
Then Evelyn’s voice.
“Stop crying, sweetheart.”
Noah sobbed, “Daddy.”
“I know.”
“You hurt.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn said something Daniel did not expect.
“I know I hurt you.”
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry.”
Noah cried harder.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Evelyn continued.
“Your daddy is coming.”
A male voice interrupted.
Hale.
“He is coming because you finally did something useful.”
Evelyn snapped, “Go to hell.”
A slap cracked through the room.
Daniel moved.
Claire could not stop him.
He burst through the stairwell door.
Hale turned.
Evelyn sat on the floor holding Noah.
Her face was bruised.
Noah saw Daniel.
“DADDY!”
Daniel crossed the room.
Hale raised a gun.
Claire fired first.
The bullet struck Hale’s shoulder.
He dropped.
Agents flooded the room.
Evelyn pushed Noah toward Daniel.
“Take him!”
Daniel grabbed his son.
Noah wrapped himself around him.
Daniel buried his face in the child’s hair.
“Daddy’s here.”
Evelyn remained on the floor.
She did not ask for help.
She looked at Noah’s ankle.
At the bruise she had caused.
Then at Daniel.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel’s eyes became cold.
“You should be.”
“I know.”
Security pulled Hale away.
He laughed despite the blood.
“You think this ends with me?”
Daniel ignored him.
Hale shouted louder.
“Ask Henry!”
Daniel turned.
Hale smiled.
“Ask him why he chose Noah.”
Daniel stared.
“My father is dead.”
May you like
Hale’s smile widened.
“Are you sure?”
