Chapter 27 - THE ROOM WITHOUT WINDOWS

Melissa remembered everything.

After the crash, Jonathan's people had taken her to Montana.

She had been unconscious.

When she woke, she was in the windowless room.

Children's drawings covered the walls.

But the children were gone.

She discovered the room was used to test memory responses.

Noah had never been physically present.

But his genetic profile had been used.

Daniel looked at the drawings.

“How?”

Melissa explained that Bellhaven had created predictive models from family medical data.

Noah had been monitored before birth.

His responses were predicted.

His memories were manipulated through stories, sounds, and objects.

The music box.

The melody.

The phrase “Mommy.”

Everything had been designed to trigger recognition.

Daniel looked horrified.

“So Noah's memories aren't all his?”

Melissa shook her head.

“Some are.”

“Some?”

“He remembers things he experienced.”

“And things they wanted him to remember.”

Noah looked at them.

“I know the difference.”

Daniel knelt.

“How?”

Noah pointed to his heart.

“Mommy memories feel warm.”

Then he pointed to his head.

“The other ones feel cold.”

Melissa began crying.

Her son had understood more than any adult realized.
