Chapter 35 - THE LAST NAME

The final Bellhaven hearing was held in Washington.
Forty-three names were read into the record.
Then one more.
Unknown Subject.
Daniel asked who it was.
The prosecutor handed him a sealed document.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
His mother.
But beneath the photograph was another name.
SARAH CARTER.
Not his mother's legal name.
Her Bellhaven identification.
Daniel stared.
His mother's records had never been destroyed.
They had been hidden.
Melissa looked over his shoulder.
“She was one of them.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he found the final line.
SUBJECT SURVIVED.
Daniel's heart stopped.
His mother had not died from natural causes.
She had disappeared.
The entire family had been lied to.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“We can investigate.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then at Melissa.
Then Noah.
He finally folded the document.
“No.”
Claire frowned.
“No?”
Daniel smiled.
“We spent our lives chasing ghosts.”
May you like
He looked at his family.
“I don't want another ghost.”
