Chapter 39 - The House by the WaterAdrian returned to the coastal inn where he had proposed to Julianne.

The gazebo remained.

He considered buying the property.

Emma threatened to stop speaking to him if he did.

“You can't buy every emotional landmark.”

“Why not?”

“Because normal people take pictures.”

So they took one.

Standing beneath the gazebo, Adrian told Emma about Julianne before everything became tragedy.

She hated olives.

Loved thunderstorms.

Cheated at cards.

Sang badly.

Collected hotel soaps.

Emma listened carefully.

For most of her life, Julianne had been an absence.

Then a mystery.

Then a victim.

Now, finally, she became a person.

That mattered most.

Emma said:

“Miriam told me I got angry at the floor when I fell.”

Adrian laughed.

“Your mother did that.”

“What?”

“Not literally. But if a chair got in her way, somehow the chair had made a moral failure.”

Emma laughed until she cried.

Adrian did too.

For the first time, memories of Julianne did not only hurt.

They connected them.
