Chapter 14 - THE TWO MOTHERS

A year after Marcus's conviction, the Ruth Carter Fund purchased an abandoned community building in Queens.

Jonathan wanted to pay for everything.

Lila refused.

"You can donate."

"I was planning to."

"You can donate the same way everyone else does."

Jonathan looked offended.

"I am your father."

"Exactly. You're biased."

Noah laughed from across the table.

Jonathan pointed at him.

"Nobody asked you."

The renovated building became the Evelyn Hale and Ruth Carter Center.

Lila deliberately put both names on it.

Reporters asked why.

"Because one woman gave me life," she answered. "And one made sure I got to live it."

The center offered temporary housing to young adults leaving foster care.

It paid for legal assistance for people whose birth records had been falsified.

It helped families reconnect.

It trained nurses and social workers on reporting illegal private-placement schemes.

Jonathan watched Lila build something from every painful piece of the past.

He finally understood why giving her money could never repair what had happened.

Lila did not want to inherit his empire.

She wanted to build her own purpose.

She kept the surname Carter.

Jonathan never complained.

On her twenty-fifth birthday, he handed her an envelope.

Inside was a new passport.

LILA RUTH CARTER.

She stared at it.

"You added Ruth."

"You said once that you wished her name was somewhere official."

Lila looked at Jonathan.

He suddenly seemed uncertain.

"If you don't like it—"

She hugged him.

By then they had learned how.

No hesitation.

No awkward distance.

Jonathan held his daughter tightly.

"You know," Lila whispered, "you're becoming reasonably competent at this father thing."

"I've been a father for years."

"Noah doesn't count. He's easy."

From the hallway came a shout.

"I HEARD THAT."

May you like

Lila laughed.

For the first time in years, Jonathan's house sounded like a home rather than a memorial.
