Adrian attended quietly.
After the service Rachel approached Emma.
“Did you find out who chose her?”
“Graham says Charles needed a body matching Julianne's general age.”
Rachel's eyes filled.
“So my sister was convenient.”
Emma hated the word.
“Yes.”
Rachel looked toward the grave.
“At least she's home.”
Adrian funded a scholarship in Donna's name for women rebuilding their lives after domestic abuse.
He did it anonymously.
Emma discovered it anyway.
“You could put the Mercer name on it,” she said.
“I've put that name on enough things.”
For Adrian, Donna's burial became another turning point.
Justice was not only punishment.
Sometimes it was restoring a name.
Sometimes it was putting someone back where their family could find them.
At Julianne's empty grave in Massachusetts, the original Mercer headstone was removed.
Adrian watched workers lift it away.
For twenty-four years it had told a lie.
