Chapter 25 - Charles Makes His MoveCharles Vane disappeared before police could question him.

His office had been emptied.
Computer drives wiped.
Passport gone.
But Rebecca Sloan discovered something else.
Charles had accessed Emma's employee records at Beacon House three months before Adrian saw the ring.
Emma stared at the report.
“He knew about me first.”
“Yes,” Rebecca said.
“Why didn't he do anything?”
Adrian understood.
“He was watching.”
Charles had known who Emma was.
Perhaps Miriam's death had finally made her visible.
Perhaps he had been trying to determine what evidence Miriam left behind.
Emma's appearance at the dinner had not been coincidence.
Beacon House's catering company was partly owned by a Mercer subsidiary.
Charles could have influenced employee assignments.
“He put me in that room,” Emma whispered.
Adrian stared.
“To see whether I had the ring.”
“And once you recognized it?”
“He knew the past had caught up.”
Rebecca's phone rang.
She listened.
Then looked at Adrian.
“Charles's car has been found.”
“Where?”
“Logan Airport.”
Emma's heart sank.
“Did he leave the country?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No passenger record.”
Adrian understood.
“He wants us to think he did.”

Charles was still nearby.
And whatever he wanted, he had chosen not to run.
