Chapter 17 - Miriam's AmbulanceMiriam Shaw's former partner was still alive.

Thomas Reed lived in Vermont.
He remembered the night clearly.
“We were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash,” he said.
“When we arrived, there were two cars.”
One belonged to Julianne.
The other had no license plates.
Julianne was unconscious but alive.
She was nearly eight months pregnant.
Miriam stabilized her.
Then dispatch ordered them to transfer Julianne to a private ambulance arriving from Boston.
“Miriam refused,” Thomas said.
“Why?”
“Because the second ambulance arrived before we reported the patient's condition.”
Emma understood.
“They already knew she was alive.”
Thomas nodded.
Miriam drove Julianne away herself.
Someone followed.
She lost the vehicle near Plymouth.
Instead of going to the designated hospital, Miriam drove to a small clinic run by a physician she trusted.
Hours later, police announced Julianne Mercer had died.
“Miriam thought someone would come looking.”
“Did they?”
“Yes.”
A man arrived at Thomas's house two days later.
He offered money.
Thomas refused.
The next week, his garage burned down.
He moved his family out of state.
Emma asked the question she feared.
“Did Miriam tell you who she was running from?”
Thomas nodded.
“She believed Leonard Mercer ordered the private ambulance.”
Adrian looked down.
Thomas continued.
“But Julianne believed something different.”
“What?”
“She thought Adrian had sent it.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
The forged signatures.
The intercepted messages.

The conspiracy had worked perfectly.
Julianne had escaped the men hunting her only to spend her remaining years believing her husband might have been one of them.
