Her testimony helped prosecutors establish Leonard's role in obstruction.
Afterward she asked to see Emma.
Emma almost refused.
Then agreed.
Eleanor studied her granddaughter.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
The answer surprised her.
Emma continued.
“Forgiveness isn't something you schedule because you're ready to apologize.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I know.”
“Why did you stay silent?”
“I was weak.”
“No. You were afraid.”
“Yes.”
Emma considered her.
“My mother was afraid too.”
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
“She acted anyway.”
“Yes.”
Emma stood.
“That's the difference.”
As she reached the door, Eleanor said:
“I have something for you.”
It was Julianne's college necklace.
Eleanor had kept it.
“Why?”
“Because after the funeral, I couldn't throw anything away.”
Emma accepted it.
Not as forgiveness.
As history.
