“And instead?”

Emma looked at the photograph.
“Why did you offer me money?”
“Because money was the only language I had left.”
“That wasn't protection.”
“I know.”
Leonard's voice broke.
“Is there anything I can do?”
Emma thought carefully.
“Yes.”
He looked hopeful.
“Tell the whole truth.”
“I already pleaded guilty.”
“Not the legal truth. Everything.”
Emma wanted a full written account of every payment, official, contractor, and decision.
No excuses.
No family mythology.
Leonard agreed.
Three months later his 612-page statement arrived.
Emma donated it to investigators and the public archive.
She never visited him again.
But she read every page.
