Chapter 1 - The Ring That Stopped the RoomEmma Doyle had served hundreds of wealthy men at Beacon House, but she had never seen one forget how to breathe.

It happened on a rainy Thursday evening in Boston.
Emma was carrying a tray of coffee toward a private dining room where Adrian Mercer was meeting three executives from his construction company. To most of the city, Adrian was impossible to miss. His name appeared on hospitals, apartment towers, university buildings, and scholarship foundations.
To Emma, he was simply Table Twelve.
“Coffee, sir?”
Adrian looked up.
Then his eyes dropped to her right hand.
The porcelain cup rattled against the saucer.
Emma froze.
“Sir?”
Adrian stood so suddenly that his chair scraped across the floor.
His face had lost all color.
“Where did you get that ring?”
Emma instinctively curled her fingers.
The ring was old—an oval emerald surrounded by six tiny diamonds. The gold beneath it had been worn almost smooth.
“My mother gave it to me.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Your mother?”
“My foster mother.”
One of the executives tried to laugh.
“Adrian, is something wrong?”
Adrian did not hear him.
Twenty-four years earlier, he had stood beside a coffin and placed that ring on his wife's hand.
Julianne Mercer had been wearing it when the funeral director closed the lid.
Adrian himself had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.
There could not be another ring like it.
He knew because he had designed it.
Inside the band were three words no jeweler had ever photographed.
Forever starts here.
Adrian looked at Emma.
“Please take it off.”
Her expression hardened.
“No.”
“I need to see the inside.”
“You're frightening me.”
Adrian stepped backward.
He realized everyone was staring.
“I'm sorry.”
Emma hesitated before slowly removing the ring.
She kept it firmly between her fingers.
Adrian leaned closer.
The engraving was faint.
But it was there.
Forever starts here.
For twenty-four years Adrian Mercer had believed his wife was dead.

Now a twenty-four-year-old waitress was holding the ring he had buried with her.
And for the first time since Julianne's funeral, Adrian wondered whether he had buried the wrong woman.
