Chapter 12 - MARCUS VALE RETURNS

Marcus was found eleven days later.
He had not fled the country.
He was staying under another name at a private lakeside property owned through one of his shell corporations.
Investigators arrested him.
His attorneys immediately attacked the case.
Twenty-three-year-old memories were unreliable.
Samuel Ortiz was elderly.
Anne Doyle had accepted money.
Charles Whitmore was trying to reduce his own punishment.
Gregory Dane was dead.
The records were circumstantial.
Marcus denied ordering anyone to sabotage Evelyn's car.
Then investigators found his old encrypted accounting archive.
One payment to Gregory Dane had been disguised as property maintenance.
The amount was unusually large.
A notation had been deleted.
Digital recovery restored part of it.
E.H. vehicle.
Another recovered document was worse.
A handwritten memo scanned into Marcus's files.
C.W. insists Evelyn cannot reach J.H. before documents recovered.
Lila read it in silence.
Jonathan walked to the window.
Marcus had understood Charles's demand perfectly.
Prevent Evelyn from reaching Jonathan.
Recover the evidence.
Protect the secret.
At a preliminary court hearing, Marcus saw Lila in person.
He smiled as officers led him past her.
"This doesn't bring Evelyn back."
Lila stood.
"No."
"Then what exactly have you accomplished?"
"My father knows she didn't willingly keep the truth from him."
Marcus's smile weakened.
"My brother knows his mother wasn't reckless."
Lila touched the sapphire ring.
"Ruth's name is clear."
She stepped closer, separated from Marcus by the courtroom barrier.
"And you don't get to decide what people remember anymore."
May you like
For the first time, Marcus looked small.
The man who had spent decades controlling rooms had lost control of the story.
