Chapter 3 - Miriam's Last EnvelopeEmma returned to her apartment after midnight.

She locked the door twice.

Her foster mother, Miriam Shaw, had died eight months earlier, but the apartment still felt filled with her.

A chipped blue mug remained beside the sink.

A yellow raincoat hung by the door.

Miriam had been a paramedic for thirty-two years. She had raised Emma alone and refused every time Emma tried to call her a hero.

“I drove an ambulance,” Miriam always said. “Heroes don't complain about parking.”

But Miriam had always become strange when Emma asked about her biological parents.

Especially about the ring.

At sixteen, Emma had asked where it came from.

Miriam had answered:

“From someone who wanted you to remember that love existed before fear.”

At twenty-one, Emma had demanded the truth.

Miriam had cried.

Then she promised she would explain someday.

She never did.

That night Emma opened the wooden box containing Miriam's personal papers.

Beneath tax forms and photographs was a sealed envelope Emma had avoided since the funeral.

Her name was written across it.

EMMA — ONLY OPEN THIS IF A MERCER FINDS YOU.

Emma stopped breathing.

She tore it open.

Inside was a single brass key and a note.

Emma,

If you're reading this, then the ring has done what I always feared it would do.

Do not trust the first story you hear.

Do not surrender the ring.

Go to South Station.

Locker 314.

After that, decide for yourself who deserves the truth.

Forgive me.

I loved you enough to be afraid.

Miriam.

Emma read it three times.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

A man's voice said:

“Miss Doyle? My name is Adrian Mercer.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Of course.

“Please don't hang up,” Adrian said.

She almost did.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“The woman who owned your ring was my wife.”

Emma looked at Miriam's letter.

Adrian continued.

“And I buried her twenty-four years ago.”

May you like

Emma whispered:

“Then somebody lied to both of us.”
