Chapter 21 - What Was Hidden Under the StoneThe cemetery caretaker remembered the visitor.

An older man.
Expensive coat.
Silver car.
He had arrived two days earlier.
Emma showed photographs.
The caretaker pointed at Graham Holt.
Adrian called police.
Investigators searched the grave area.
Beneath a loose stone behind the headstone they found a waterproof metal tube.
Empty.
Whatever Julianne had hidden there was gone.
Emma was furious.
“Graham has it.”
“Probably.”
“What was inside?”
Adrian looked at Julianne's notebook.
One repeated reference appeared in the final pages.
Page 47 had been torn out.
Another line read:
If they ever find the boxes, 47 is enough.
Emma understood.
“The missing page.”
Adrian nodded.
The environmental reports proved corruption.
But page 47 apparently proved who ordered the cover-up.
Graham had beaten them to it.
That evening Graham called Emma.
“I have something your mother wanted you to see.”
“Page forty-seven?”
Silence.
Then:
“Come alone.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Do you really think I'm that stupid?”
“No.”
“Then why ask?”
“Because if Adrian comes, I burn it.”
Emma looked across the room at Adrian.
Graham continued.
“Midnight. The old Mercer shipyard.”
The call ended.
Adrian immediately said:
“You're not going.”
Emma looked at him.
“You realize you've known me for less than a month, right?”
“And I've already learned you don't follow instructions.”
“Good.”
They contacted investigators.
May you like
Emma would go.
But she would not go alone.
