Chapter 9 - Henry Cole's ConfessionHenry Cole lived in a small house in Maine.

He was eighty-one.
When Adrian showed him the ring, the old man's eyes filled with tears.
“I wondered where that ended up.”
Emma leaned forward.
“You've seen it before?”
Henry looked at Adrian.
“You put it on the woman's hand.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You knew she wasn't Julianne.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word landed heavily.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was a coward.”
Henry explained.
The body had arrived from a private morgue controlled by a physician who worked with the Mercer family.
The identification paperwork was complete.
Henry was told not to question it.
But while preparing the body, he noticed surgical hardware in the woman's wrist.
Julianne's medical file contained no such surgery.
He called the morgue.
An attorney named Graham Holt arrived within an hour.
Adrian knew the name.
Graham had been Leonard Mercer's closest legal adviser for more than thirty years.
“He gave me twenty thousand dollars,” Henry said.
“To stay quiet?”
“To follow instructions.”
Henry had taken the money.
But guilt consumed him.
After Adrian placed the emerald ring on the body during the viewing, Henry removed it before the burial.
“Why?”
“Because it was the only thing I could save.”
“Save for whom?”
Henry looked at Emma.
“Miriam Shaw.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Henry explained that Miriam had contacted him days earlier.
She claimed Julianne Mercer was alive.
Henry hadn't believed her.
Then the wrong body arrived.
He understood.
He gave Miriam the ring.
“She told me it might someday prove that the funeral was a lie.”
Emma looked at the ring on her finger.
For twenty-four years, it had been exactly that.
Proof.
Adrian asked:
“Who was the woman in the coffin?”
Henry shook his head.
“I never knew her name.”
“Who ordered the substitution?”
“I only dealt with Graham Holt.”
Emma leaned toward him.
“And Leonard Mercer?”
Henry's eyes moved to Adrian.
“I never saw your father.”
Adrian exhaled.
Then Henry added:
“But Graham called someone from my office that night.”
May you like
“Who?”
“He said, ‘Mr. Mercer, it's done.’”
