She handed Emma a photograph of a smiling boy.

“I came because your mother tried to stop it.”

Emma looked at the picture.

“She didn't succeed.”

“No.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“But she tried when everyone around her told her to shut up.”

Emma placed the photograph inside Julianne's notebook.

Over time, more photographs joined it.

The scandal that began with one ring was no longer about one wealthy family.

It had become about hundreds of ordinary families who had never possessed enough power to force anyone to listen.
