Chapter 38 - Emma Quits the RestaurantEight months after the night Adrian saw the ring, Emma resigned from Beacon House.

Her manager hugged her.
“I suppose you're going to become a billionaire now.”
Emma laughed.
“No.”
“Then what are you doing?”
Emma had enrolled in law school.
She wanted to work in public-interest litigation.
Adrian tried not to look too proud.
He failed.
On Emma's last shift, he reserved Table Twelve.
She approached wearing her old uniform.
“Coffee, sir?”
Adrian looked at her hand.
The emerald ring remained there.
He smiled.
“I think we've done this before.”
“This time try not to terrify the waitress.”
“I'll do my best.”
She poured his coffee.
Adrian left a twenty-dollar tip.
Emma stared at it.
“You're a billionaire.”
“You told me not to buy you things.”
“A decent tip isn't a house.”
Adrian added another twenty.
Emma laughed.
