Chapter 40 - The Daughter Outside the Frame

Six weeks later, the Northbridge investigation had spread across four countries.

Jonathan remained in federal custody.

Rachel and Kyle had not been found.

The courts established an independent authority to protect legitimate witness identities while reviewing the commercial files one by one.

Mia returned to work part-time.

Eva rented a house nearby and began rebuilding an identity that belonged only to her.

Nora prepared Celia Ward’s evidence for trial.

Evelyn and Thomas testified under protection.

Life did not return to normal.

Mia no longer believed normal was something a person returned to.

It was something she chose and built.

One Sunday evening, Mia placed four plates on the dining table.

Eva arrived carrying bread.

Nora brought a box of documents she promised not to open until after dinner.

Evelyn stood beside the kitchen window, watching the road.

A package appeared on the porch.

The security camera showed no delivery vehicle.

Inside was the original summer photograph Kyle had stolen from Mia’s office.

The image had been restored to its full width.

Mia stood near the lake at thirteen.

Brianna and Kyle were several feet behind her.

At the far edge of the photograph stood another girl.

She had Mia’s height.

Eva’s eyes.

And a silver bracelet on her wrist.

Someone had cut the girl from every copy except this one.

On the back was a sentence.

THE WRONG DAUGHTER WAS NEVER MIA.

Three slow knocks sounded at the front door.

Everyone stopped.

Reed, stationed outside, called Mia’s phone.

“No one approached from the road.”

The knocking came again.

Mia opened the security feed.

A young woman stood on the porch holding the missing corner of the Northbridge registry.

She lowered her hood.

Eva stepped beside Mia.

The resemblance was not perfect.

It was closer than coincidence.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Mara Mercer.”

Mia activated the speaker.

“Who sent you?”

“Kyle brought me out of the program.”

“Where is he?”

“Waiting to see whether you let me inside.”

Mia’s hidden phone illuminated.

An unknown caller had sent one message.

DO NOT LET HER COMPLETE THE NAME.

Mara raised the torn registry page.

A partly concealed signature appeared at the bottom.

MARA M.

The woman smiled.

“Jonathan told you there were only two daughters, didn’t he?”

Behind her, a black vehicle stopped beyond the reach of the porch lights.

Its rear door opened.

Someone stepped out wearing Evelyn’s silver bracelet.

Mara turned toward the darkness.

May you like

Then she looked back at Mia.

“You have thirty seconds to decide which one of us is the real third signature.”
